Two data center contracts. Two weeks. $80 billion committed. That’s where Anthropic is as it heads toward a planned IPO, and the latest piece is a $35 billion cloud computing deal with Lambda, the Nvidia-backed cloud provider.
Reuters reported the agreement, citing an anonymous source. None of the companies involved would comment on it.
The number that matters more than the dollar figure is 350 megawatts. That’s the rough capacity of the facility going up in Nueces County, Texas, and it’s the kind of figure that tells you what Anthropic thinks demand for Claude and Claude Code looks like over the next several years.
The crypto miner turned landlord
Hut 8 is developing the site. If that name rings a bell, it’s because Hut 8 used to mine cryptocurrency, and it’s now in the business of putting up buildings full of someone else’s accelerators.
The company announced a 15-year lease with an unnamed client back in July. Do the arithmetic on the timeline and the unnamed client stops looking especially mysterious.
Nvidia holds the lease for the data center itself, according to the Wall Street Journal. So the chip supplier is on the lease, its portfolio company is selling the cloud capacity, and a former bitcoin miner is pouring the concrete. Follow the money in this deal and it loops back on itself more than once.
$45 billion last week, $35 billion this week
The Lambda contract lands days after Anthropic announced a $45 billion deal with Nscale for a data center in West Virginia. That’s two separate multibillion-dollar capacity commitments inside a month, both framed around keeping up with growth in Claude usage and in Claude Code, the company’s coding tool.
Signing $80 billion of compute in short order ahead of an IPO is a statement about expected demand, not just current demand. Anthropic is buying capacity it doesn’t need yet, on the bet that it will.
The counterweight is that none of this is verified by the parties. The Lambda figure comes from one anonymous source. The lease detail comes from a separate report. Hut 8’s July announcement named nobody.
What to watch instead of the headline number
Skip the billions and track the megawatts. Power, not capital, is the binding constraint on AI buildouts right now, and 350 megawatts in Nueces County is a concrete, checkable thing. Construction schedules slip. Interconnection queues are real. When Hut 8 reports progress on the Texas site, that’ll tell you more about whether Anthropic can actually serve the demand it’s paying for than any contract value ever will.
