Nearly two weeks after iOS 27 officially launched, Apple has shipped its first patch. The update, iOS 27.0.1, arrived a few hours ago, and it goes after the bug that has frustrated many iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max owners: Face ID.
The problem was about as bad as a biometric bug gets. On Apple’s newest phones, Face ID either didn’t work correctly or stopped responding entirely.
Face ID that locked up the whole phone
Many users reported that Face ID failed to recognize them in certain situations. And the failure didn’t stay contained. It could freeze the device, crash it and send it into a reboot.
Other owners never got that far. When they tried to set up the feature, they got the message “Face ID is not available.”
On a Pro phone, that’s a failure of the main way you unlock it. Getting a fix out within two weeks of the iOS 27 launch is the minimum you’d expect.
The rest of the patch notes say almost nothing
Face ID isn’t the only fix. iOS 27.0.1 also addresses several other bugs, and those apply to every iPhone model, not only the 18 Pro line.
Apple doesn’t say much about them. The release notes read: “This update includes bug fixes for your iPhone, including the following issues.” That line tells you there are fixes. It doesn’t tell you which ones matter to you.
How to get iOS 27.0.1
The install path hasn’t changed. Open Settings, tap “General” and then tap “Software Update.”
If you have an iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 18 Pro Max that has frozen, crashed or rebooted after a failed face scan, or that has shown the “Face ID is not available” message during setup, install this now. On any other iPhone, it’s a smaller patch you can install whenever it suits you.
