Buffy the Vampire Slayer meets L.A. Noire in Nightborn, a new gothic detective game

You play a vampire. You’re a detective. And your Maker has vanished.

That’s the pitch for Nightborn, a small indie RPG that’s trying to do something nobody has managed in almost 30 years: build a game that feels like Buffy the Vampire Slayer without being embarrassing about it.

The twist is that you’re not staking anything. You’re working a case.

The setup is the selling point

Set in New Orleans, Nightborn casts you as a vampire detective investigating the disappearance of your Maker, a prominent figure in an elite vampire community also called the Nightborn. So the interrogation-and-evidence structure of Rockstar’s L.A. Noire gets dropped into a world that owes its bones to Sunnydale.

Developer Occupational Hazard has it slated for Q4 2027 on Steam, which means any date between October 1 and December 31. That’s a long runway, and it needs one.

Because what’s been shown so far looks unfinished. This is an indie game reaching for a lot of ambitious mechanics at once, and you should expect a certain amount of jank. The foundation is promising. The polish isn’t there yet.

Buffy has never had a good game and that’s a problem

Here’s the uncomfortable truth for anyone who grew up with the show: even the best Buffy the Vampire Slayer game is an easily skippable disappointment. It’s a fact that still irritates the most devoted fans, and no amount of nostalgia has fixed it.

The show earned better. Buffy is one of the finest vampire series ever made and a coming-of-age epic that bottled the anxiety of the late 90s alongside every high school movie trope of the era. It popularized the modern appetite for vampire fiction by pairing over-the-top spectacle with dialogue that still holds up on a rewatch.

And right now, aside from a handful of smaller upcoming Buffy projects, there’s nothing major planned for the IP. Which leaves the job to games like this one.

Vampire games are having a moment again

The genre went quiet for years after Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines. There were duds scattered along the way, but nothing that reignited anything.

That’s shifting. With Blood of the Dawnwalker on the horizon, the wave of vampire games that Buffy made possible is finally arriving. Nightborn sits at the smaller, stranger end of that group, and its niche framing is exactly what makes it interesting.

A vampire solving a missing-persons case among other vampires isn’t a pitch you’ve heard 15 times before.

What it’s borrowing, and what it needs to prove

The neon-soaked setting reads modern and gothic at the same time. The emphasis on dialogue that lands should appeal to anyone who loved Buffy‘s scripts. And the noir register isn’t as far from the show’s plotlines as it might sound.

None of that guarantees anything. Potential is cheap and Occupational Hazard still has to build the thing.

But if you’ve spent years searching for a game like L.A. Noire or a game like Buffy, this is the first one in a while that’s aiming at both targets simultaneously.

The world doesn’t just deserve a decent Buffy-style video game. It deserves one as compelling as the show was nearly three decades ago.
