Foundation Is Officially Coming Back With A Major New Release

Foundation is getting a video game, and it’s not the one people have been asking for.

The Apple TV+ series has pulled Isaac Asimov’s universe into a level of popularity it hasn’t had before, with three critically acclaimed seasons behind it and a fourth on the way. That kind of momentum sends new fans hunting for anything with the name attached: the original novels, sure, but also games. And there’s a brand-new Foundation project arriving soon to feed that hunger.

It’s called Foundation: Galactic Frontier.

What you’re actually getting

Galactic Frontier isn’t the Mass Effect-style RPG a lot of fans were hoping for. It’s a big title that blends RTS elements with base building, hero collecting and isometric combat.

You play as a completely new character trying to work through the machinations of a galaxy in turmoil. There’s a central story, iconic characters to meet, collect and level up, missions to take on, and RTS battles in space.

You also build a spaceship, with numerous cabin types that contribute to your journey.

The pitch is scale. It’s aiming to take the political tension, the enormous battles and the character drama of the show and the books and turn all of it into an original story you play rather than watch.

The Steam port, explained

Galactic Frontier is coming to Steam soon, though developer FunPlus International AG hasn’t announced a specific date yet.

Here’s the useful part for newcomers: it’s a port of the mobile game of the same name. If you’re hearing about it now for the first time, you’re not walking in years behind. You’ll get access to all the new content coming to Galactic Frontier this year, including the new season.

It’s completely free-to-play. Which means microtransactions, obviously. But much of the content can be experienced without spending any money.

Why a Foundation game makes sense

Foundation has always felt like a story built for a Mass Effect-esque RPG, or a CRPG in the vein of Rogue Trader. So a developer taking a swing at turning its universe, characters and story into a game isn’t a surprise.

The material is unusually well suited to it. Asimov’s universe is complex and nuanced in a way that works for prestige television and for narrative-focused gaming, and those two things don’t overlap as often as you’d think.

If Galactic Frontier does well on Steam and the show keeps climbing on Apple TV+, a full RPG could follow. That’s a hope, not a plan.

Something to do while you wait

Season 4 details are still thin. This gives fans something to occupy the gap, alongside all the previously released Foundation content and the many future updates already heading Galactic Frontier’s way.

For newcomers, it’s a low-cost entry point into Asimov’s universe. For people who’ve been reading these books for decades, it’s a win of a different kind: the story finally big enough, and popular enough, to be worth building a galaxy around.

Now someone just has to make the RPG.
