Cambria shifts to Ethereum mainnet for Genesis
Cambria has confirmed that its upcoming MMORPG Genesis will operate on the Ethereum mainnet, marking a strategic shift from the previous Dungeons mode that utilized the Abstract layer 2. This decision underscores the team’s vision of Genesis as a lasting, stable environment for players.
The choice of Ethereum mainnet directly relates to the security and settlement benefits for a game built around a permanent economy. Genesis will begin with an invitation-only whitelist, allowing select players to join before gradually expanding access. Interested players can apply via a link shared on Cambria’s X profile.
Royal Charters for early players
Players accepted into the whitelist will receive a Royal Charter, which records essential details such as the joining wave, assigned House, home city, and specific Affinities. For instance, a player might belong to House Warwick, have Thorin’s Peak as their home, and display skills as a Blacksmith and Swordsman. This establishes a strong connection to both in-game factions and roles from the outset. Founder Ben.zzz’s narrative frames this launch as akin to the settling of a new land.
Controlled access and gradual rollout
Unlike previous seasons that welcomed thousands, Genesis is intentionally starting small with a capped initial player base. This approach allows the team to monitor economic dynamics in real-time. Earlier seasons saw concurrent player counts between 3,000 and 4,000, but this time, no guarantees of profit exist for early adopters. “None of this will be a free lunch that you can just freely take profit from,” Ben.zzz said. He noted that designing an enduring on-chain economy presents significant challenges.
A lasting economic model
Genesis distinguishes itself by eliminating resets. Players retain assets, guilds manage treasuries, and competition for resources occurs over an extended timeline. The game revolves around five major cities, allowing players to purchase buildings and earn taxes, introducing a layer of political strategy into the gameplay.
Three modes will coalesce in Genesis. Dungeons offers players risk-based adventures where they pay 0.10 USD per Key. Islands provides storage and social spaces, while Gold Rush features resource extraction and the crafting of valuable equipment. These interconnected systems emphasize collaboration among players.
RSGP and upcoming milestones
The announcement follows the establishment of the Cambria Foundation, which is spearheading the development of a consensus mechanism known as Real Stakes Game Play (RSGP). Details about RSGP’s launch and distribution are pending, with historical players required to opt into the Genesis Event by September 29, 2026.
On the technical front, patch 0.6 was released on September 28, optimizing performance for 10,000 concurrent players and significantly reducing resource consumption.
Evolution of Cambria
With three years of development, Cambria has evolved into a pixel art MMO driven by risk. Its earlier seasons generated substantial player engagement, including 1.7 million USD in spending during Season 3 and a total of 5 million USD in risked Keys. The upcoming Genesis aims to combine existing modes into a single, permanent world, with the whitelist currently open for applications.
