EVE Frontier kicks off Sanctuary gameplay cycle
EVE Frontier has launched Sanctuary, the sixth iteration of its gameplay cycle, forcing players, referred to as riders, to start anew in a challenging environment. Players face a heightened difficulty—environmental hazards like temperature extremes have been added, necessitating careful ship positioning to avoid overheating or freezing.
Until the end of the month, the game is free to all players before access returns to paid Founder Access accounts. However, this latest cycle brings significant challenges that enhance survival mechanics. The introduction of unpredictable NPC Feral AI ships increases the danger level.
New ship mechanics
One of the most prominent updates focuses on player empowerment through a new ship system. This shift replaces a level-based catalog with a modular approach, allowing players to upgrade their base vessels by acquiring and integrating modules. Functions such as printing and refining now occur aboard the ship, eliminating the need for external objects. Further expansions are planned for future cycles.
“Sanctuary is where the central experience of EVE Frontier begins to take shape,” game director Sæmundur Hermannsson said. The survival loop emphasizes scavenging and building, providing players with purpose in a hazardous world.
Fuel-driven economy
Another transformative feature is the introduction of a fuel-driven economy. Players can exchange the LUX currency for a test version of the future EVE token. This enables actions like acquiring mining lenses and extracting resources for fuel production.
LUX, obtainable through looting feral drones and trading with roaming trader drones, serves as a currency for critical gameplay functions. The intent is to establish a sustainable economy shaped by scarcity and player decisions.
“Cycle 6 brings together systems we have been developing and testing throughout Founder Access,” development director David Bowman said. He noted that the interconnected elements, including modular ships, environmental hazards, and evolving Ferals, create new choices for players while allowing the game world to respond to their actions.
EVE Frontier continues to refine its gameplay and economy, encouraging player engagement and strategy.
