Seven. That’s how many PlayStation games have sold more than 100,000 physical copies in the United States since the start of 2026.
Not seven blockbusters. Seven total, across every publisher, every PlayStation platform, PS4 included.
The number comes from Mat Piscatella, the games market analyst at Circana (formerly NPD), and it lands at the worst possible moment for anyone still buying discs. PlayStation confirmed it’ll stop producing new titles on disc starting January 2028. So this isn’t a slow fade anymore. It’s a countdown.
The week that said it all
Piscatella pointed to the week ending July 11 as the tell. In that stretch, only two PlayStation titles moved more than 10,000 physical copies in the US.
Two.
He was careful to note the year-long figures cover games from all publishers and all PlayStation platforms, PS4 among them. This isn’t a PS5-only snapshot or a cherry-picked window. It’s the whole shelf, and the shelf is nearly empty.
A few discs are still moving
Separate estimates from Alinea Analytics suggest a handful of releases are holding the line. EA Sports FC 26, Resident Evil Requiem and 007 First Light may sit among the strongest physical launches of the year. For each of those titles, at least 12% of estimated global sales came from physical copies.
Resident Evil Requiem led that pack. Roughly 27.8% of its estimated 3.5 million sales came from discs, which works out to nearly one million physical copies worldwide.
One caveat worth keeping straight: those Alinea numbers are global, so you can’t line them up directly against Circana’s US-only data. Different maps, different scale.
The money tells the same story
If the unit counts don’t rattle you, the spending will. Annual US consumer spending on physical games fell from about $11.5 billion in 2009 to $1.6 billion in 2026, according to figures Piscatella shared.
That’s not a dip. That’s a collapse spread across roughly a decade and a half, and it’s still sliding.
Half the hardware can’t even read a disc
Part of the reason is sitting in living rooms right now. The cheaper PS5 Digital Edition and the Xbox Series S both ship without a disc drive, and buyers keep choosing them.
Piscatella estimates more than half of Xbox Series consoles in the US have no disc drive at all. For PlayStation 5, it’s more than a quarter.
You can’t sell a disc to a machine that has nowhere to put it.
What 2028 really means
Physical editions now make up a relatively small slice of the console market, and the January 2028 cutoff draws a hard line under it. New PlayStation games on disc stop then.
So if you’re the kind of player who likes a spine on a shelf, a case you can lend a friend, a game you own instead of license, you’ve got a window. Seven titles cleared 100,000 copies this year. Next year the pool gets smaller. The year after that, the option’s gone.
Buy the discs while there are still discs to buy.
