In Brief:

  • Games for a Living (GFAL) posted a teaser on X on Oct. 1 pointing to a new version of “WWII: TCG.”
  • GFAL co-founders Marc Tormo and Christian Gascons built the original “World War II: TCG” at FrozenShard Games. That game went offline in 2022.
  • GFAL hasn’t announced a release date, platforms or any role for the $GFAL token.

Games for a Living is bringing “WWII: TCG” back. The studio’s founders built the original card game a decade ago and shut it down in 2022.

“THE BATTLEFIELD HAS CHANGED,” GFAL said in a post on its official X account. “A NEW ERA OF WWII: TCG.”

That was the whole announcement. The studio didn’t give a launch window, name any platforms or say how the new version would tie into its token or marketplace. The game isn’t listed on GFAL’s website yet. The site shows two titles: “Diamond Jewels” and “Elemental Raiders (official site).”

Same team, second attempt

The game has a direct line to GFAL’s leadership. Tormo, GFAL’s chief creative officer and co-founder, ran the original Kickstarter campaign for “World War II: TCG.” It raised $18,001 from 199 backers.

Tormo spent 2006 to 2012 at Blizzard Entertainment, where he worked in quality assurance and in processes and policies. In 2012 he went back to Spain and co-founded FrozenShard S.L. with Gascons, who is now GFAL’s COO. FrozenShard was founded Sept. 24, 2012.

“World War II: TCG” was FrozenShard’s first release, and Tormo has called it the studio’s main project. He also directed “Magic Quest TCG,” “Starquest TCG,” “Heroes Empire,” “Monster Battles” and “Farm Blocks,” among other titles.

How the original played

The first version was a free-to-play, turn-based online collectible card game. It launched on iOS on March 6, 2014, came to Android on June 19, 2014, and reached Steam on Feb. 23, 2019.

Its main mechanic was unit promotion. A card started as a basic soldier, and players spent resources to promote it, which added stats and abilities. As of 2015, players could pick from five factions: Germans, Russians, Japanese, Americans and British.

The game had a single-player campaign of more than 500 missions, online and offline PvP, a deck builder and more than 1,000 cards.

Backend shutdown

The original didn’t close for lack of players. GameSparks, FrozenShard’s backend provider, decided to end its service. FrozenShard said it couldn’t find another service that could run the game, so it shut it down.

Steam players said “WWII: TCG” and “Magic Quest: Brotherhood” were both scheduled to go offline on Sept. 30, 2022. Players on the game’s Steam forum said the game relied on so many custom features that it couldn’t be moved to other servers.

Where GFAL stands

GFAL’s current lineup is built around the $GFAL token, which works as the shared currency across its games. Players use it to turn in-game items into NFTs, buy exclusive items and trade them on the studio’s marketplace.

“Elemental Raiders,” a turn-based strategy game, is in early access on mobile, PC and Mac. Tormo is listed as its game design director. The studio has run tournaments for the game, including a $35,000 GFAL Ignite event powered by BNB Chain.

Its newest release, “Diamond Jewels,” is a match-3 game playable in the browser. It launched Sept. 2, 2025, with jewelry crafting, collecting and trading, plus a peer-to-peer marketplace.

Back in 2022, when the original game went dark, one player on its Steam forum said it was a pity FrozenShard couldn’t keep its trio of card games running “or possibly sell them to another company.” The game is now back with the same people who built it.
