Until now, a free Google account got you Gemini 3.6 Flash and some access to 3.1 Pro, though how much varied. Starting in October 2026, it gets you Flash-Lite. Nothing else.

Google is limiting which Gemini models personal account users can reach, and the cuts hit both the free tier and its cheapest paid plan. If you don’t subscribe, you’ll only get Flash-Lite, the smallest model. The more capable Flash and Pro models won’t be included.

The $4.99 plan gets thinner too

AI Plus subscribers, who pay $4.99/month, lose access to Pro. They keep Flash-Lite and Flash.

If you want all three models, you’ll need AI Pro at $19.99/month or AI Ultra at $99.99 or $199.99/month. That’s roughly four times the price of Plus just to get back the Pro model that free users could use in some form until now.

The setup should look familiar. It mirrors OpenAI’s freemium model with ChatGPT. Google lists the full breakdown of the subscription tiers on its support page.

Most people won’t notice, which is the point

The real-world impact is likely small. Most people who use Google's AI casually have no idea which model they’re running, so a quiet swap from Flash to Flash-Lite probably won’t register.

Power users make up just a few percent of the total base, and they’re likely already paying for subscriptions. For anyone on Plus, the change is easy to see: Pro is no longer part of that $4.99 plan.

Google may also be thinking further ahead. The company may be setting the stage for the larger Gemini 4 Argon, which could be pricier to run.

So if you’re on AI Plus and you rely on Pro, the math is simple. Either Flash is good enough for what you do, or you’re about to become a $19.99/month customer.
