Rockstar’s $400 GTA 6 collector’s edition was announced on September 24. It took fans only a few days to start printing their own version of it for whatever they felt like paying.
The target is Macca the Alligator, the cartoon mascot figure that comes in the box. Someone modeled the whole figure and uploaded it online as a printable file. Instead of spending $400, you pay its creator what you want and print it yourself.
What $400 gets you, and what it doesn’t
The part stinging people most: the collector’s edition doesn’t include the game. Rockstar is asking for nearly half a rack and giving you a box of GTA 6-branded merch instead.
Inside are the alligator figure, stickers, pins, a hat and a pair of Oakley sunglasses. Those sunglasses are probably where most of the money goes. Nobody is 3D printing Oakleys, but at least one of the trinkets has turned out to be easy to copy.
One Brazilian fan posted progress photos on X. The first section of the alligator was done, and they said only the tail and the base were left to print.
The internet can’t agree on this one
People are split, and the two sides don’t overlap. One camp thinks the copycats found a smart fix for an expensive problem. The other says a printed copy misses the whole point of buying something rare.
“Why would you print it if it already lost its main and only purpose, which is rarity?” one user asked on X/Twitter.
“Dude, I’m all for criticizing the price, but this is just f**king stupid,” another said.
Plenty of people were happy about it, though. “I imagined this would happen, but not so soon… That said, I want one,” one commenter said.
“This is the coolest thing! I only wanted this [figure], but I wasn’t about to drop $400 to get it,” another said.
The Red Dead comparison nobody at Rockstar wants
The wider argument keeps going back to the Red Dead Redemption 2 collector's edition. It cost $100 and came with items tied more closely to the game, including a physical version of the in-game map. Lots of players think it was the cooler box, and it cost a quarter of the price.
The GTA 6 box also lands at a bad moment for anyone who wants a real disc. The “physical” version of GTA 6 is physical in name only. You get a case with a download code inside. That’s likely part of Rockstar's effort to stop early leaks, but players are connecting it to Sony’s plans to end production of physical game discs completely by January 2028.
So for a lot of fans, the closest thing to owning a physical piece of GTA 6 is a plastic alligator they printed at home, one tail and base at a time.
