Sony has spent weeks telling anyone who’ll listen that GTA 6 plays best on PS5. So naturally, Take-Two just signed a fresh publishing deal with Microsoft and Xbox.

The timing looks pointed. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026, which puts this deal less than two months out from release. If you’re an Xbox player hoping this means Take-Two is swinging hard toward your console, you’re going to be let down. The deal is mostly about paperwork.

What the filing says

The deal showed up in an official Take-Two SEC filing, so it’s confirmed. The filing describes a new “long-term XBOX Publisher License Agreement with an effective date of September 17, 2026. The Agreement grants the company to develop, publish, have manufactured, market, advertise, distribute, and sell Xbox compatible products for all XBOX devices.”

Under the terms, Microsoft keeps approval rights over game concepts, final versions and certain marketing materials. Money moves through wholesale pricing and/or revenue sharing on Take-Two’s digital products.

None of that is new territory. The two companies already had an agreement like this, and this one renews it. GTA 6 just happens to be the biggest thing Take-Two has coming down the pipe.

The phrase worth paying attention to

Three words stand out: “all XBOX devices.”

The previous agreement covered specific consoles like Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. The new wording should also cover hardware that’s coming later. That would include Project Helix, which is rumored to launch in 2027. Keep in mind that the Helix timing is a rumor, and the filing doesn’t name Helix anywhere. Linking the two is speculation based on that broader language.

So what changes for GTA 6

Nothing much. Microsoft gets to keep marketing GTA 6 on Xbox right up to the November 19 launch. The game is reportedly already "breaking records" on Xbox, and this renewal just keeps the business relationship between Take-Two and Microsoft running as the release date gets closer.

Some people have read the deal as a hint that Xbox is up for sale. That theory has a problem. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has already confirmed that Microsoft isn’t selling Xbox.

Sony can keep its “plays best on PS5” campaign. Over on the other side, Microsoft just signed the boring contract that lets it sell the same game on every box it makes for years to come.
