GTA 6’s Weapon System Could Rewire Open-World Gunplay, and I’m Here for It

Four weapon slots. That’s reportedly what you get in GTA 6: two long guns, a pistol, a melee weapon. Everything else lives in your trunk or your hideout.

I’ve been playing this series since Vice City, which means I’ve watched Rockstar rebuild guns from the ground up more than once. This one looks like the biggest break yet, and it’s aimed squarely at the thing I never thought they’d touch.

The magic pocket.

Goodbye to the Doraemon inventory

For years in GTA V I could stroll through Los Santos hauling pistols, rifles, shotguns, explosives and whatever else I’d unlocked, all of it summoned out of nowhere the second I wanted it. Ridiculous. Also enormously fun. That instant access was part of the series’ identity.

Current reports say that ends here. The four-slot loadout isn’t something Rockstar has spelled out publicly, so treat it as reporting rather than confirmation, but it points at a game far more interested in roleplay than convenience.

And honestly? I want it. If I’m walking Jason or Lucia into a robbery, I should have to decide beforehand what they’d realistically bring.

Shotgun and rifle for one job. Suppressed weapon and pistol for another. I’d rather build a loadout with some thought behind it than carry the entire armory and forget the inventory exists at all.

Your car becomes part of the plan

Weapons that don’t make the active loadout can reportedly sit in the trunk of your car or back at your hideout. That single detail changes what a vehicle is for. It stops being something you steal and drive around and starts being preparation.

Which is where this gets interesting. Forget the right gun, and suddenly the car matters. Lose the car in a chase, and the new wanted system has real teeth.

It reminds me of Red Dead Redemption 2 far more than any previous GTA. I liked having a reason to think about what I was carrying before heading somewhere dangerous. Grand Theft Auto VI could import that feeling into something much faster and much more chaotic.

The gear you can actually see

There’s something satisfying about equipment being represented physically. Jason has visible carrying gear. Weapons can be picked up manually.

Small stuff, but it makes the inventory feel like something Jason owns instead of a menu full of icons.

People will notice the gun in your hand

The biggest roleplay shift might be how NPCs react. According to details from the extended look at the game, civilians will notice when Jason or Lucia have a weapon drawn, which means pulling one out in public could change the behavior of everyone around you.

Sounds minor until you remember how the old games worked. I could walk around Los Santos with a rifle in my hands and the world had no particular reason to care until I opened fire.

In GTA 6, putting the weapon away could matter as much as taking it out.

Recoil, tap firing and no auto-aim

The shooting itself appears to be drifting away from arcade territory too. Per reported details on the gunplay overhaul, auto-aim is disabled by default, aim stickiness can be adjusted, and weapons are expected to have more recoil and kickback alongside crisper sound design. Assault rifles may even reward controlled bursts and tap firing.

None of that has come from Rockstar directly, so file it under reports. But it suggests encounters that feel more dynamic without turning GTA into a tactical shooter.

The rest of the system runs on the same logic. You can switch which hand holds a weapon. Picking up equipment requires an actual interaction. Carrying loot can affect how quickly you reload or whether you can use a two-handed weapon at all.

Your character’s physical situation during a robbery becomes something you have to account for instead of something you ignore. With the way the criminal profile is built, every move counts.

I still want the stupid escalation

I don’t want Grand Theft Auto 6 to become a slow military simulator. Part of what I love about these games is the absurd escalation. Some nights I want a carefully planned robbery. Some nights I want to steal a car and survive six wanted stars.

The new system doesn’t have to take that away. The redesigned weapon wheel still keeps weapons, equipment and consumables accessible, and the world keeps running while the wheel is open. That balance is the part I’m most curious to play.

All of this is built around one idea: weapons belonging to the character, the vehicle and the world around them rather than to a hidden bag of infinite holding.

I grew up with the wonderfully stupid infinite arsenal. I’m surprisingly ready to leave the Doraemon pocket behind and find out what happens when choosing a gun actually costs you something.
