The next mainline Pokémon game may not force you to pick a side in the turn-based war.
According to Centro LEAKS over on Twitter/X, Pokémon Winds & Waves will run a battle system that “is a mix of the classic turn-based battles with some of the features introduced in the Legends games.” The wrinkle worth paying attention to: “area of effect attacks will now be a thing and the gimmick plays a role on them.”
That’s a hybrid. Half the fanbase has been begging for one, the other half is already sharpening knives.
What the leak says about catching
One user asked the question everyone who played Legends wanted answered: “Please tell me it’s like Legends where you can catch a Pokémon by hitting them with a Pokéball without initiating a battle?”
Centro LEAKS replied, “Yes.”
Short answer, big implication. Overworld catching survives the jump into the mainline series, if the leak holds.
And it hasn’t been confirmed. Take it with a pinch of salt, the way you should take every Pokémon leak.
The comments are not unanimous
Plenty of fans think this is a mistake. “They really should just stick with turn-based. This is about to be a mess and I bet the AI will always get a cheat first move,” one user said.
Another was more measured about where the Legends experiment actually landed: “Regardless of my love for Legends Arceus , ZA was a step-down from it. And BOTH did alienate the base fans used to the original battle system. This may be a bad move for the main series.”
That second read is the one to sit with. The Legends saga has drawn mixed reviews from critics and general audiences alike, and a lot of the complaints landed on the same spot: not enough ambition, not enough growth between entries.
Why a hybrid might actually work
Some players hated the real-time mechanics Legends introduced and wanted the original turn-based rhythm back. Others liked the change. Splitting the difference is the one move that keeps both camps at the table.
Area-of-effect attacks are the part that would genuinely change how you fight. Tie the generation’s gimmick into them and positioning stops being decoration.
The scale everyone’s expecting
Winds & Waves kicks off Pokémon’s 10th generation, and it’s shaping up as the biggest and most ambitious entry yet. The setting is a sprawling archipelago with plenty of underwater areas to explore.
Starters are Grass-type Browt, Fire-type Pombon and Water-type Gecqua.
One leak even claims there will be over 300+ brand-new Pokémon added to the ever-growing roster. If that number is anywhere close to accurate, it’s a lot of new designs to sit through.
A 30th anniversary with something to prove
The game was announced as part of Pokémon’s 30th anniversary celebrations, which explains the expectations. Fans want it to blow all previous entries out of the water on scale and prowess.
With four months left in the year, the 2027 release calendar is about to start filling up, and Winds & Waves sits near the top of the anticipated pile.
Whether the game folds both playstyles together or simply hands turn-based combat back to the people who never wanted it gone, nobody outside Game Freak knows yet. More news should surface as 2027 gets closer.
For now, the whole thing rests on a two-sentence leak and a one-word reply: “Yes.”
