Over $680. That’s what the memory and storage inside a single PlayStation 6 reportedly cost, before you get to the chip, the case, the controller or the box it ships in.
The number comes from KeplerL2, a known AMD insider who has passed along information before. This time the post went viral on social media, and the reason is obvious: $680 is more than the PS5 cost at launch.
The math behind a four-figure console
According to KeplerL2, the RAM and NAND storage in the PS6 add up to more than $680 per console. If that holds, Sony’s next machine could carry a very high price tag. The rumor going around is that it’ll land well above $1,000.

There’s one detail you shouldn’t skip. KeplerL2 also said that when Sony finalized the PS6 design, those same components cost significantly less. So the $680 figure reflects today’s market, not the market Sony was planning around.
Everything costs more now
The broader context makes the rumor easy to believe. Global component shortages have hit the hardware market hard, and plenty of companies have pushed through price hike after price hike.
You’ve probably felt it already. The PS5 costs noticeably more today than it did in 2020, when it launched. And the PS5 Pro has climbed even further in some stores, reaching as much as 1,400 euros. It originally launched at 800 euros, then went up to 900.
Microsoft may get there first
Sony isn’t the only one building a next-gen box. Microsoft is already preparing Project Helix, which is expected to launch, probably before the PS6.
Microsoft has said it needs to look at new business models to keep costs at affordable levels. With RAM and storage prices where they are, that’s a pretty direct admission of the problem.
