Rockstar’s parent company has finally said something that matters to anyone still waiting on Red Dead Redemption 3. It’s a hint, and a pretty good one.
Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick said new technology could shorten how long the studio’s games take to make. If he’s right, the decade-long gaps between Rockstar’s biggest releases may be over.
What Zelnick said
In a recent interview, Zelnick pushed back on the idea that long development cycles mean the studio is taking its time.
“I wouldn’t confuse long development cycles with a lackadaisical approach to development cycles. Everything we do is in the context of milestones, budgets, and delivery dates,” Zelnick said.
Then he said the part Red Dead fans will want to frame. “Certain titles are so complex and so challenging to build, they take a long time… It is possible that recent developments in technology will allow us to compress some development timelines without compromising quality, and we hope to do that.”
Look closely at the wording. “It is possible.” “We hope.” You don’t get a date, you don’t get a confirmation that Red Dead Redemption 3 exists, and nobody at Take-Two has said the word “Red” out loud. What you do get is the clearest signal so far that whatever Rockstar makes after its next game won’t take 13 years.
GTA VI has taken every bit of the oxygen
Timing explains a lot here. Grand Theft Auto VI launches in just over a month, after well over a decade of waiting, and it’s the most anticipated video game of all time. Rockstar put all of its eggs in that basket, and the Red Dead series got left in the dust.
That’s rough for a franchise whose last entry is widely considered one of the greatest video games ever made. Red Dead Redemption 2 isn’t even a decade old yet, and people are already restless. With Red Dead Revolver and Red Dead Redemption filling out the rest of the series, a third Redemption game isn’t much of a stretch.

So is Red Dead next?
Once GTA VI ships, Rockstar’s attention could plausibly swing back to the frontier. Zelnick’s comments don’t confirm that. But if the game does go into development, they suggest you won’t be waiting as long to play it.
(The timing is a little brilliant on Rockstar’s part, too. Everyone is about to disappear into Vice City for months, which buys the studio plenty of quiet time before anyone starts asking about horses again.)
The story could go in a lot of directions. A prequel could follow Dutch and Hosea’s early days. A sequel could pick up with Jack Marston after he got his revenge. A third game feels inevitable, and the possibilities are wide open.

For now, the only thing on the record is a CEO saying faster development is possible and that “we hope to do that.” Red Dead fans have gotten by on less.
