A show that started in 1997 just took over global streaming again, and it did it by changing its own name.
“South American Biker Gangs” is the season 29 premiere, and it arrived under a new banner: South America. Within a day of airing, it was the most-watched sitcom on streaming services worldwide. Thousands of viewers went straight to Paramount Plus once it went live.
On the platform itself it landed at No. 2 for most popular TV show, beaten only by Lioness. For a 29-year-old animated comedy, that’s a strange and slightly absurd sentence to have to write.
The title change is the joke
Trey Parker and Matt Stone renamed the show as a shot at President Donald Trump’s decision to rebrand geography, specifically the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario, appending “America” to each. Apple and Google went along with it. So South Park became South America.
Messing with your own title is not a small move. A show’s name is most of its identity, and 28 seasons of brand equity is not the kind of thing anyone gives up casually. Parker and Stone did it anyway, which tells you how much they wanted the point to land.
It worked. Fans were curious about how the rebrand would play out on screen, and that curiosity converted into the kind of numbers most comedies don’t see in their first season, let alone their 29th.
Trump has been the recurring target
He’s been the show’s main subject for several seasons now. Each year the series folds in the events people are already arguing about and then ridicules them, which is the whole engine and has been for decades. Satire is the point, and neither creator has shown much interest in softening it.
How to actually watch it
“South American Biker Gangs” airs on Comedy Central at 10 p.m. EDT/PDT. It hits Paramount Plus the following day for viewers in the United States, Canada and Australia. Everyone else is still waiting.
Which means the biggest sitcom on streaming right now isn’t even available everywhere yet.
