Most casual Stargate fans never noticed it happened. The franchise quietly benched SG-1, the team that carried 10 seasons and more than 200 episodes, and handed the controls to a squad of strangers.
That happened in Stargate: Timekeepers, the 2024 real-time tactics game from Slitherine Ltd. It’s also the most recent official release in the whole franchise, which makes the swap stranger the longer you think about it.
Meet the new team
Timekeepers sits squarely in the SG-1 era. It picks up around the end of season seven and opens during the Battle of Antarctica, so the familiar faces are still in the building.
But you aren’t playing as them. Commander Eva McCain and her unit start out backing up the iconic team against Anubis, and from there the story belongs to McCain and her specialists.
McCain handles leadership. Around her you get sniper Max Bolton, technical expert Sam Watson, drone specialist Derreck Harper, Jaffa rebel A’ta and Unas warrior Xugga. That’s a completely different ensemble, and the game sends them on an original campaign tangled up with the Jaffa Resistance, Moloc’s forces and the Unas.
Jack O’Neill, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson and Teal’c still matter to the setting. The game just deliberately steps them aside and builds its 14-mission story around characters created for this adventure. So SG-1’s universe keeps going while SG-1 itself stops being the team you control.
Why that’s a bold move
The whole appeal of SG-1 was the team. O’Neill, Carter, Jackson and Teal’c had a mix of humor, loyalty and genuine camaraderie that set the show apart from the more self-serious sci-fi dramas of its era.
That chemistry is why the show still has a fiercely dedicated fanbase decades later. Stargate never had the mainstream footprint of Star Trek or Star Wars, but SG-1 built an unusually loyal audience anyway.
And it built all that on top of the original Stargate film, turning a single idea about interplanetary travel through ancient portals into a sprawling universe of alien civilizations, artifacts and long-running character arcs. Replacing the people at the center of that is no small thing, even in a spinoff game.
The revival that didn’t come
Fans hoped Timekeepers would kick off something bigger. It didn’t.
The game launched on PC in January 2024 and wrapped its 14-mission campaign with Part 2 in October 2024. Console versions for PS5 and Xbox Series X/S were announced in December 2025. Since then, there hasn’t been another major original Stargate game.
Television has been worse. Amazon MGM Studios officially greenlit a new Prime Video series in November 2025, with veteran Stargate writer Martin Gero attached as showrunner and Brad Wright and Joseph Mallozzi also involved. On paper, that was the franchise’s strongest shot at a real comeback in years.
Then, in June 2026, Amazon MGM decided not to move forward with the project. Stargate was left without a new series once again.
Where that leaves the franchise
For a property with decades of mythology and a devoted audience, the current state of things is a little absurd. The newest official Stargate story is a tactics game, and the heroes at its center aren’t the ones anybody fell in love with.
Somewhere in that game, Eva McCain is still leading Xugga, A’ta and the rest through the gate while O’Neill and company watch from the sidelines. For now, she’s the closest thing Stargate has to a new lead.
