Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance gets its Evolution expansion this September

Lieutenant Church is marching the Resistance north, into the frozen territories of Canada, hunting for allies and hope in a place where neither is easy to find.

That’s the setup for Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance: Evolution, the newest expansion for Slitherine Ltd.’s 2024 real-time tactics game, and it arrives this September.

Legion built something faster

Up in the ice, past Legion’s mining operations and its experimental research sites, a new kind of killing machine is taking shape. These are the advanced Revs, engineered for speed and close-quarters combat.

They’re the next step in Legion’s evolution. And a glimpse of what may soon come.

The expansion runs eight campaign missions. You’ll command both Resistance and Integrator forces, shutting down mining operations and storming research facilities across the frozen wastelands, and the mission types stretch wider than the base game’s: sabotage operations, defensive sieges, full-scale assaults.

The humans start upgrading too

Here’s the part that changes how the fights feel. Technology evolves on the battlefield for both sides, and humans begin integrating augmentation technology of their own. Enhanced muscle fibers. Neural uplinks. Reflex boosters.

The result is the first augmented soldiers capable of standing toe-to-toe with Legion’s most advanced machines.

So you’re not just placing units and hoping the math holds. New augmentation systems come with new technologies and abilities to master, and the story threads through Church, Silas and 1462.

Why the base game earned this

Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance sits at a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam, which is not a given for a licensed strategy game built on a movie that split audiences.

The pitch has always been blunt about what it wants from you. “Terminator: Dark Fate – Defiance is not just a game; it’s an adrenaline-fueled journey where your strategic prowess decides the fate of mankind against the machines,” the synopsis reads.

The single-player campaign puts you in command of the Founders inside the “Terminator: Dark Fate universe that follows the war between humanity and Legion’s synthetic intelligent machine network.” You control multiple armies at once, and unit placement, battle tactics and abilities are all your call.

Evolution promises a grittier version of that same “real-time strategy experience set in the dark future of Dark Fate.”

The 1984 problem

James Cameron gave the world The Terminator in 1984, and the idea has never quite let go: cyborg assassins living among us, machines deciding humanity is the problem. Decades of movies, shows and games have picked at that same thread.

It lands differently now that artificial intelligence keeps getting more sophisticated. Fiction may become reality, or it may not, and either way you’re the one deciding where the augmented soldiers stand when the Revs come through the snow.
