A racing sequel almost nobody in America has seen made $656.4 million this year. Not a typo. Pegasus 3 pulled $1.3 million domestically and still landed in the top 10 of 2026’s worldwide box office, which tells you most of what you need to know about how the year has gone.
Disney, Sony, Warner Bros., Universal, Paramount and A24 all came into 2026 wanting a piece of it. Most of them got one.
Marvel, the DC Universe, Star Wars, Dune, Toy Story, Hunger Games and Super Mario all have new installments either in theaters or arriving in the months ahead. Christopher Nolan, Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Robert Eggers and David Fincher all have new films.
And some of the year’s genuine wins didn’t even make the cut. Zendaya and Robert Pattinson handed A24 an early hit with The Drama. Sony’s animated GOAT cashed in. Scream and Mortal Kombat both came back with the biggest box office performers those franchises have ever had. None of them cracked the top 10.
Here’s who did, counting up.
10. Minions & Monsters, $449.5 million
Illumination’s third Minions movie opened to $37 million domestically, a franchise low, and the reviews were rave. Those two facts sitting next to each other made a lot of people nervous.
It’s since made $449.5 million worldwide, split $168.3 million domestic and $281.1 million international. It needs strong legs to hold this spot, let alone climb.
9. Obsession, $474.7 million
Curry Barker’s low-budget horror movie opened May 15 to $17.1 million and then did something movies mostly stopped doing. It went up.
Second weekend: $23.9 million. Third: $27.3 million. Its fourth and fifth weekends ($25.3 million and $19 million) both beat its opening. It stayed in the domestic top five for seven straight weekends.
The total sits at $474.7 million, with $262.7 million of that domestic and $212 million overseas. Word of mouth, doing what word of mouth is supposed to do.
8. Pegasus 3, $656.4 million
The racing sequel released in China on Feb. 17 for Chinese New Year and made $653.9 million there. It’s opened in five other territories. That’s the whole story.
The first two films made $255.5 million and $422.3 million in China, so this isn’t a fluke. Pegasus 3 is now the franchise’s biggest earner and holds the largest international total of any 2026 movie.
7. Project Hail Mary, $684.2 million
Amazon MGM finally has a real blockbuster. Ryan Gosling’s sci-fi movie opened March 20 to $80.5 million domestically and has run to $684.2 million, nearly even between $344 million at home and $340.1 million abroad.
It didn’t post a weekend drop steeper than 42% until its 11th weekend in release. Eleventh. It’s now Amazon MGM’s highest-grossing movie and Gosling’s second-biggest, and it passed the other Andy Weir adaptation, The Martian, which finished at $630.6 million.
6. The Devil Wears Prada 2, $690.8 million
Disney reached back into the Fox vault and got $690.8 million for it. The Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway sequel opened May 1 and took two weekends at #1 domestically, starting with $76.7 million and reaching $220.5 million.
But the real money is overseas: $470.3 million, led by the United Kingdom ($46.3 million), Italy ($37.5 million), Germany ($35 million), Japan ($34.6 million) and Brazil ($33.3 million).
5. The Odyssey, $911.3 million
Three weeks. $911.3 million.
Nolan’s adaptation opened to $123.5 million domestically, his biggest non-Batman debut, then dropped just 29.6% in weekend two for another $87 million. That second weekend alone beat what Oppenheimer made in its first.
It’s already passed Oppenheimer‘s entire domestic gross. International accounts for $515.8 million against $395.5 million at home. A $1 billion finish is assured, and it could end up the highest-grossing R-rated movie ever made.
4. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, $932 million
Tom Holland’s fourth solo outing has made $932 million in a matter of days, off the second-biggest global opening weekend in history.
Domestically it took the record outright. Its $360 million launch beat the $357 million Avengers: Endgame put up. It’ll cross $1 billion inside its first week and it’s positioned to land among the highest-grossing films ever released.
3. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, $1.011 billion
Illumination and Nintendo’s sequel opened April 1 and took a little over two months to clear $1 billion. It held #1 domestically for three weekends and never dropped more than 50% in its first eight.
Domestic sits at $429.8 million, international at $581.6 million, with Mexico ($67.7 million), France ($54.1 million), the UK ($51.2 million) and Japan ($49.6 million) doing the heavy lifting abroad.
It won’t reach the $1.3 billion The Super Mario Bros. Movie managed. It also spent a long stretch as the year’s biggest movie before it got knocked off.
2. Michael, $1.016 billion
Lionsgate’s Michael Jackson biopic opened April 24 to a record $97.2 million and hasn’t posted a weekend drop over 50% in nine weeks of release.
It’s over $1 billion worldwide now, with $643.7 million of that international, driven by the UK ($71.6 million) and France ($57.7 million). Domestic stands at $372.3 million.
Michael is the highest-grossing musician biopic ever made, and it passed Oppenheimer a while back to become the biggest biopic of any kind.
1. Toy Story 5, $1.06 billion
Pixar’s return to Woody and Buzz opened to $159.6 million domestically, the best opening any Toy Story movie has had and the second-biggest debut for a Pixar animated film behind Incredibles 2.
It’s at $1.06 billion worldwide, $461.6 million domestic and $604.2 million international, and it held #1 at home for its first two weekends.
That makes it 2026’s biggest movie. For now. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is $128 million behind with a week of release under its belt, and the math on that one isn’t close.
