Warner Bros. just told its investors that a second Hogwarts Legacy is being made. That’s it. That’s the confirmation.
No trailer. No release window. No screenshot of a slightly better-looking Great Hall. The news came buried in a recent earnings report, which is the least magical place a wizarding game has ever been announced.
What the report actually says
The studio described a “second installment” of Hogwarts Legacy as part of its expanding pipeline, and framed it as a real contributor to the bottom line.
“We expect games to more meaningfully contribute to segment profitability going forward as our pipeline expands, including the second installment of Hogwarts Legacy,” the report said.
That’s corporate speak for: this thing is going to make us a lot of money, please keep buying our stock. But it’s also the first time the sequel has moved from “priority” to “in the works.”
Nobody should be surprised by this
Warner Bros. had already said a follow-up was a big priority after the first game landed. And the numbers explain why nobody at the studio needed convincing.
Hogwarts Legacy has sold 40 million copies, putting it among the best-selling games ever made. In 2023, it became the first title since 2009 that wasn’t a Call of Duty or a Rockstar game to finish as the year’s top seller.
Break that streak and you don’t get asked whether you want to make another one. You get a budget.
The TV show is about to do the marketing for them
Harry Potter is getting a second wind at Warner Bros. anyway. The HBO adaptation relaunches the franchise this Christmas, and it’s already moving ahead on a second season with casting that includes Nicholas Hoult.
A show that size will almost certainly pull new eyes toward the brand, which does nothing but favors for a game sequel arriving somewhere behind it.
When you might actually play it
The first game came out in 2023, so a sequel by late 2028 wouldn’t be shocking. Sooner is possible.
There’s obvious room to grow the map, but the expensive part is already built. Hogwarts and the areas around it exist as assets, and reusing them is the fastest path to a finished game.
The other possibility is the opposite: that the absurd success of the first game buys the team more time and more money to push further than they could the first time around. Those two paths lead to very different release dates.
And then there’s the fun speculation. The PS6 is rumored for fall 2027. A wizarding open world as a launch title for a new console is the kind of thing platform holders write large checks for.
For now, all anyone has is one sentence in a financial document. More wizarding adventures are coming. The details are somebody else’s problem for another quarter.
