An address that hadn’t touched its Bitcoin since 2013 emptied all 500 coins in a single transaction Tuesday. The fee: 191 sats. Twelve cents to move $31.8 million.

That’s the detail worth sitting with. A stash worth close to $32 million at today’s prices, untouched for 12 years, went out the door for less than the cost of a stick of gum.

Why this one got attention

Old addresses wake up all the time. This one landed in the middle of something else.

Lookonchain flagged the move on X, and Bitcoiners jumped on it because of the wallet drainage happening with Coldcards right now. Some speculated the HODLer was moving funds somewhere safer.

That’s speculation, not a finding. Blockchain data shows the transaction. It doesn’t show the motive.

The Coldcard numbers keep climbing

Hackers started draining over $35 million in Bitcoin from wallets last week after finding a vulnerability in the Coldcard wallet product software.

The figure now could stand at $130 million, according to Galaxy Research, which said Monday it was investigating a fourth wave of attacks.

Four waves. In roughly a week. And the estimate has close to quadrupled in that span.

Coinkite’s own assessment is the alarming part

Coinkite, the company behind Coldcard, said Sunday that all of its models were now vulnerable following more thefts.

Not a specific batch. Not one firmware revision. All of them.

Engineers have warned that all Bitcoin addresses related to Coldcard could be at risk eventually. If you’re holding on one, the advice circulating among Bitcoiners is to get your coins onto a new security setup.

Dormant doesn’t always mean lost

Bitcoin that sits still for years is often chalked up to lost coins. Amateur investors forget the private keys to their digital wallet, and the balance just sits there forever as a monument to a bad password decision.

But whales, meaning an investor or investors holding over 1,000 Bitcoins, occasionally move funds after many years. That tends to shake markets, because other investors read the movement as a big sale coming.

It often isn’t. Sometimes whales are just moving their Bitcoin to a hardware wallet or consolidating their coins.

What the fee tells you

The 12-cent fee is the part most coverage skips past, and it’s the most concrete thing here. Moving everything in one go, at that cost, is the behavior of someone consolidating rather than someone scrambling.

Whether that person was reacting to Coldcard or just doing housekeeping after 12 years, nobody outside that wallet knows yet. What’s documented is the $130 million estimate, the fourth wave under investigation, and a manufacturer telling customers every model it makes is exposed.

If you own a Coldcard, treat that last line as the story and the whale as the sideshow.
