Valhalla
What is Valhalla?
Valhalla Land is an upcoming MMORPG crossed with a turn-based strategy game, built on Berachain and set across the nine worlds of Norse mythology. Rather than the real-time combat most MMORPGs use, fights here are turn-based: you gather a squad of warriors, and battles are won by calculating your actions in advance and using class-specific skills at the right moment. The game is announced for Windows, macOS and Linux and is not yet released.
How to play Valhalla
Progression follows the World Tree, Yggdrasil β a journey across nine contrasting realms, each with its own locations, hidden treasures and traps. Combat covers three modes: PvE battles against AI enemies that scale up in difficulty as you go, 1v1 PvP duels with matchmaking, and large-scale guild wars of up to five players a side. Guilds are the social spine of the game, and the developers are explicit that joining one unlocks power that solo players cannot reach. Character building carries the replayability, while the turn-based layer is where skill growth actually happens.
What makes Valhalla different
The genre blend is deliberate and unusual. An MMORPG gives you a persistent character worth investing hundreds of hours in; a turn-based tactics layer gives every individual fight a puzzle to solve rather than a rotation to execute. Valhalla Land's design argument is that the two cover each other's weaknesses β the MMORPG supplies the long-term reason to care, the turn-based combat keeps the moment-to-moment interesting. Note: the game is still in development, and features described here come from the developers' own published plans rather than a live build.
Norse setting with a journey across the nine realms of Yggdrasil
Three combat modes: scaling PvE, matchmade 1v1 duels and guild wars up to 5v5
Characters and most gear are NFTs, tradable in-game or on any NFT marketplace
Announced for Windows, macOS and Linux rather than browser only
Built on Berachain, a young network fewer players already hold a wallet on
Turn-based combat is a deliberate break from MMORPG convention and will not suit everyone
Guilds are where the power is, so solo players start at a structural disadvantage
Our verdict on Valhalla
Valhalla Land is an unusual pairing: an MMORPG built on a turn-based tactics layer, set across the nine worlds of Norse mythology and announced for Windows, macOS and Linux on Berachain. It has not released, so what follows is a read of the developersβ published design rather than of a live build.
The design argument is sound on paper. An MMORPG gives you a character worth investing hundreds of hours in; turn-based combat on a hex grid makes each individual fight a puzzle to solve rather than a rotation to execute. The two cover each otherβs usual weaknesses β the persistent character supplies the long-term reason to care, and the tactics keep the moment-to-moment interesting. Progression follows Yggdrasil across nine contrasting realms, with PvE that scales in difficulty as you climb, matchmade 1v1 duels, and guild wars of up to five players a side.
The blockchain layer is straightforward by the standards of the category: characters and most gear items are NFTs, tradable in-game or on any NFT marketplace. The obvious risk is the one every unreleased game carries, sharpened here by an asset layer that exists before the game does. Berachain is also a young network, which narrows the pool of players who already hold a wallet on it.
Worth watching if turn-based tactics are the reason you play RPGs and you are comfortable following a project still in development. Anyone wanting something to play today should wait for a release date.
