In Brief

• Square Enix has started validating transactions on the Tezos blockchain by running a baker node.
• The move shows the company’s growing interest in blockchain technology and Web3 gaming.
• Tezos continues to attract established gaming companies as its ecosystem expands.

Square Enix, one of the most recognized video game publishers in the world, has joined the Tezos blockchain as a validator. The decision highlights the growing connection between the gaming industry and blockchain technology.

The company is now operating a baker node on the Tezos network. In this role, Square Enix helps confirm transactions and supports the stability and security of the blockchain. On Tezos, validators are called bakers, and their job is to process transactions while ensuring the network continues to run smoothly.

Tezos is an open source blockchain designed to support decentralized applications and digital transactions. The platform uses a Proof of Stake system, which allows the network to operate with significantly lower energy consumption compared to traditional Proof of Work systems. It is also known for its governance structure and the ability to introduce upgrades without disrupting the network.

Square Enix has built a strong reputation over decades through some of the most successful game franchises in the industry. The company owns several well known titles, including Final Fantasy, which has sold more than 203 million copies worldwide, and Dragon Quest, with global sales exceeding 94 million units. The classic arcade game Space Invaders is also part of its portfolio.

Square Enix is no stranger to blockchain gaming. The globally recognized publisher has already backed several Web3 initiatives over the years, including projects such as SYMBIOGENESIS with Animoca Brands, Soccerverse, Enjin, HyperPlay, Elixir Games, and The Sandbox.

In May 2022, the company also made a major strategic move by selling three well known intellectual properties, including Tomb Raider, to THQ Nordic in a deal valued at around $300 million. The decision was part of a broader effort led by then CEO Yosuke Matsuda to redirect resources toward blockchain technology and expand the company’s involvement in Web3.

Hideaki Uehara, General Manager of Investment and Business Development at Square Enix Holdings, said that operating a baker node gives the company a direct way to explore blockchain infrastructure.

According to Uehara, Square Enix has already participated in different blockchain initiatives. Becoming a validator on the Tezos network allows the company to take a more active role while gaining practical experience with the technology.

Efe Kucuk, Head of Gaming at Trilitech (Tezos R&D Hub), commented on the partnership: “Having Square Enix as a validator brings tremendous credibility to the Tezos network. Their reputation in gaming makes them an ideal partner as we continue to demonstrate Tezos’ potential beyond traditional applications. We’re excited to see how their expertise might contribute to the evolution of gaming.”

Interest in blockchain based gaming continues to rise, and Tezos has become an increasingly active platform for developers. The ecosystem now includes a wide range of games, from casual mobile titles to more complex multiplayer experiences.

During 2025, the Tezos gaming ecosystem recorded roughly 440,000 unique users and processed about 31 million transactions. The participation of established gaming companies suggests that blockchain gaming platforms are gaining stronger recognition across the industry.
