Cybercriminals target GTA 6 pre-orders
As anticipation for Grand Theft Auto 6 grows, cybercriminals are capitalizing on the hype. Fake applications and phishing scams have flooded the internet, aiming to exploit users eager for early access.
NordVPN’s Threat Intelligence team reported a surge in malicious activity, spurred by rumors that pre-orders might open soon. Attackers are leveraging this excitement to collect personal data, create chaos, and distribute malware. The threats vary from simple phishing sites to elaborate malware campaigns targeting platforms for which GTA 6’s support has not been confirmed.
Tactics range from offering “exclusive beta keys” for gaming consoles to persuading users to pay for subscriptions or download harmful software. “When people are desperate to get early access to something, their guard comes down,” said Marijus Briedis, CTO of NordVPN.
Fake packages have occasionally led victims to malware disguised as critical system files. One example included a bogus installer that functioned as an Nvidia graphics driver, granting attackers remote control of compromised machines.
Additionally, some cloned apps exploit the GTA 6 branding to generate misleading ad revenues and funnel users towards harmful websites. NordVPN also identified numerous amateur phishing pages targeting Rockstar Social Club credentials through counterfeit login forms, placing sensitive accounts at risk for resale or in-game fraud.
Researchers traced one malicious Android app to a domain known for distributing banking trojans and ransomware, posing unique risks for cryptocurrency users safeguarding their private keys.
Whispers of crypto integration in GTA 6 have circulated for years, particularly after a doctored trailer sparked speculation. However, as the November release nears, concrete details remain elusive, leaving room for continued cyberattacks exploiting user enthusiasm.
