Spotify’s new Running Mode won’t track your pace, and that’s the catch

Spotify killed a running feature once before. In 2015 it launched Spotify Running, which used your phone’s hardware to detect your pace and automatically served up music that matched it. The company retired it in 2018.

Running Mode, announced today, does not do that.

That’s the single most important thing to understand about Spotify’s new fitness feature. The old one read your body and reacted. This one waits for you to fill out a form.

You define the workout, not the other way around

Running Mode asks you to proactively define your own workout playlist requirements from the start. You pick from 25 curated running playlist presets, then narrow them down by preferred music genres, workout duration, BPM and training method.

Three training methods are on offer: interval, steady and pyramid.

Spotify’s framing is that this helps you “spend less time hunting for the right music and more time moving.” Fair enough for a Sunday long run where you already know the plan. Less useful when your pace drifts and the playlist doesn’t.

The AI part is a Prompted Playlists descendant

Running Mode is built on the personalization capabilities Spotify introduced with Prompted Playlists last year. The company said fitness-based prompts have been some of the most popular uses of that feature, which explains why a dedicated running product exists at all.

So this is less a new engine than a purpose-built front end on one Spotify already shipped. If you’ve typed a workout prompt into Prompted Playlists and liked what came back, you know roughly what you’re getting.

There’s a coach, and it only speaks English

Running Mode includes optional audio prompts that Spotify said provide “timely cues and motivation without getting in the way of your music.” Those prompts are English-only.

Optional is doing useful work in that sentence. You can turn the voice off entirely and treat this as a playlist generator with a BPM slider.

The availability list is short

You need a Premium subscription. It lives under the Fitness hub Spotify launched in April, and it’s available starting today on iOS only.

Seven countries make the cut: the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and Sweden. Android users get nothing today, and Spotify hasn’t said when that changes.

Who this is actually for

If you run structured sessions and already know you want 20 minutes of intervals at a set BPM, Running Mode saves you the search. That’s a real, small convenience, and it’s free with a subscription you’re already paying for.

If what you remembered fondly about Spotify Running was that it did the thinking for you, open the Fitness hub, build one pyramid preset, and see whether specifying your own tempo feels like control or like homework. On my first pass it felt like homework.
