Bitcoin sits near $64,000 as U.S. inflation data looms and a Harmony exploit guts ONE

An attacker minted about 4 billion ONE tokens out of empty blocks on Harmony, roughly 26% of the token’s circulating supply, and bitcoin barely twitched. That gap tells you most of what you need to know about how this market is trading right now.

Bitcoin added 0.23% since midnight UTC, sitting around $63,900. BTC last printed at $64,166.00. A nine-figure protocol failure on a layer-1 didn’t move it a percent.

What actually happened to Harmony

Harmony, a layer-1 blockchain network for DeFi protocols and marketplaces, confirmed it was hit by an exploit early in the Asian day. The mint came through empty blocks.

Then came the part that hurt holders. Around 2.8 billion of those tokens were funneled to exchanges, and ONE fell as much as 40% to a record low.

That’s the sequence worth watching in any mint exploit. The mint itself is a ledger event. The exchange deposits are the liquidation, and they happen fast enough that most retail holders find out from a price chart rather than a disclosure.

The macro print everyone’s waiting on

The July U.S. CPI report is due at 12:30 UTC, and broader markets were little changed ahead of it. That’s the number that tends to set the tone for risk assets, crypto included.

Oil is doing its own thing

Brent crude is near $90 a barrel. More Houthi attacks on shipping in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and a U.S. strike on a vessel in the Gulf of Oman renewed supply concerns overnight.

Energy prices feed straight back into the inflation math that CPI is about to measure. So the two stories aren’t separate, even if the crypto tape is ignoring both.

Sentiment is sitting in fear

The Fear and Greed index reads 38. That’s not panic, but it isn’t a market leaning forward either.

Which fits the price action. Bitcoin absorbed an altcoin blowup and a pending macro catalyst without doing much of anything, and a reading of 38 is what that looks like as a number.

Zcash’s Tachyon upgrade aims to scale shielded payments, improve quantum readiness, and test whether its funding, security and governance can hold.

That last clause is the interesting one. Plenty of upgrades promise throughput. Fewer are framed, up front, as a test of whether the project’s funding and governance survive the attempt.

Quantum readiness is the kind of feature that’s easy to announce and hard to verify from the outside. Shielded payment throughput, on the other hand, is measurable, and it’s the part users will notice first.

Why the ONE crash didn’t spread

A 40% drop to a record low in a token with billions of units in circulation would once have dragged the whole altcoin complex with it. It didn’t here.

Bitcoin’s 0.23% move is the tell. This was priced as a Harmony problem, not a crypto problem.

What to watch when the number lands

If you’re holding ONE, the exchange balances matter more than the mint total. About 2.8 billion of the 4 billion minted tokens already moved to venues where they can be sold, and that overhang doesn’t clear because a postmortem gets published.

For everything else, set an alert for 12:30 UTC. A market that shrugged off a 26% supply dilution on a layer-1 is telling you it has one thing on its mind, and it isn’t Harmony.
