Minecraft is getting volumetric fog. Read that again.
The game built out of cubes that ran on a potato in 2011 arrives on Nintendo Switch 2 on Oct. 27 with Vibrant Visuals switched on by default, and that means enhanced lighting, improved water reflections, directional lighting and more detailed shadows. Mojang announced it Wednesday.
It’s a native version, not a bumped-resolution port. Mojang said it’s optimized specifically for Switch 2.
The blocks stay blocky
Here’s the part that matters to anyone who’s watched a beloved game get “modernized” into something unrecognizable: the classic blocky style survives. Vibrant Visuals changes how light behaves, not what the world is made of. Your dirt block is still a dirt block. It just casts a better shadow.
Vibrant Visuals wasn’t built for this launch, either. It first showed up as part of the Chase the Skies update, one of the game’s most significant technical upgrades since it launched.
You probably don’t have to buy it twice
If Minecraft is already sitting on your original Switch, you’re covered. Mojang is offering an upgrade path to the Switch 2 Edition, which should mean either a discounted purchase of the native version or access through an eligible Minecraft subscription.
All the details haven’t been shared yet. But the shape of the deal is clear enough, and it’s more generous than it had to be.
Furniture, cushions and one predictable joke
The Switch 2 release closes out a year where Mojang kept shipping. The latest game drop adds decorative furniture options including cushions and beds, so you can build out an interior without going hunting for mods.
That fits the studio‘s recent approach: smaller, more frequent content updates instead of one big annual release. And yes, cushions in the game meant in-game whoopee cushions followed. Of course they did.
The franchise keeps sprawling
At Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase in June, Mojang and Double Eleven announced Minecraft Dungeons 2, a sequel to the 2020 dungeon-crawling action RPG. It’s slated for next year with new biomes, enemies and cooperative adventures layered onto the original’s loot-driven gameplay.
There’s another film too. A Minecraft Movie Squared is in the works for a 2027 release.
Run from it, hide from it, more Minecraft arrives all the same.
