There’s a keg in the background of a kitchen scene in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and the label on it says “Green Jackal.”
That’s it. That’s the whole clue. It sits in a corner of the frame during an apartment party, small enough that most of the audience walked out without registering it.
But the Jackal is a major Spider-Man villain in Marvel Comics, and “Green Jackal” is a strange thing to letter onto a prop beer keg by accident.
Most of the conversation around the movie has gone to Peter Parker’s evolving powers, MJ’s new relationship and the MCU’s growing roster of threats. This detail went the other way. Fans found it, and now they’re asking whether the Jackal is closer to this story than anyone assumed.
Why the name matters more than the prop
The Jackal’s comic-book identity is Miles Warren, a scientist whose obsession with cloning and genetic experimentation made him one of Peter Parker’s most disturbing enemies. Cloning. Genetics. Bodies that stop behaving.
Now consider what Brand New Day is already about. Peter’s arachnid DNA has started producing increasingly dangerous physical changes, which puts scientific experimentation and altered genetics at the center of the plot before anyone spots a keg.
A Jackal reference dropped into that movie reads as deliberate. Random fictional beer brands don’t usually rhyme with the thesis.
The boyfriend, and the jacket
The scene involves MJ and her new boyfriend, played by Eman Esfandi. He’s wearing a green jacket.
On its own that’s nothing. A guy owns a jacket. Paired with a keg labeled “Green Jackal” a few feet behind him, fans have read the matching color as visual foreshadowing, and Marvel does use costume and production design to build associations. That still doesn’t prove this character is secretly the villain. It just means the color didn’t get picked out of a hat.
One line of dialogue does the heavy lifting
The strongest hint isn’t visual at all. MJ says her boyfriend frequently tells her that she is withholding things.
In a normal relationship that’s a complaint. In this movie it’s a man running a line of inquiry.
MJ has repeatedly been rescued by Spider-Man throughout the MCU, which makes her connection to the superhero valuable to anyone investigating Peter. And here’s the cruel part: Doctor Strange’s spell erased Peter Parker from MJ’s memory after No Way Home, so she doesn’t consciously know the two people are connected. She can’t tell him what she doesn’t know she knows. That makes her a useful target for someone trying to uncover Spider-Man’s identity, and a defenseless one.
Even his name is unsettled
Esfandi is credited as MJ’s boyfriend. Recent reporting has noted that open-caption screenings identify the character as Paul, while the credits themselves reportedly leave him as “The Boyfriend.”
That gap has already fueled speculation about Paul Rabin from the comics. The Jackal theory proposes something considerably darker, and it wants every loose thread in one hand: the keg, the jacket, the sharp-looking tooth fans noticed, the questions aimed at MJ.
Where the theory runs out of road
There’s still an enormous gap between an Easter egg and a confirmation. “Green Jackal” could be a playful nod to Miles Warren and nothing else. The boyfriend could genuinely be Paul, no secret identity attached.
What keeps it alive is that this particular movie has already shown it will hide important information inside ordinary details. Brand New Day was well-received and broke records days after release, though plenty of fans are unhappy with the ending.
So the theory stays speculation. But somebody in the art department typed “Green Jackal” onto a keg, printed it, and set it three feet behind a man in a green jacket.
