Ranked in Marvel Rivals was already rough. Now players have found a way to bail on a match they’re losing without eating a single point of penalty, and it works by tricking the game into thinking they’re cheating.
“People are intentionally abusing the cheating detection system to cancel games with no consequence when they are losing,” LytePK posted on X. “This has happened to me 5X on stream today alone.”
How the trick actually works
Edit the game’s config files mid-match and Marvel Rivals reads it as cheating, then abruptly ends the bout. The sequence involves briefly exiting the game before editing, then coming back after moving the altered config into a new folder.
The catch, or rather the lack of one: nobody appears to be getting punished for it. That turns a cheat-detection tripwire into a free escape hatch from losing imaginary ranked points.
Config editing isn’t new, and it isn’t always shady
Messing with these files has become fairly common for reasons that are mostly harmless. It lets players work around some of the game’s performance problems on PC by adjusting technical details the menus don’t expose.
Some of it is less innocent. Players have stripped out visual effects like fog to gain a competitive edge. Others have disabled “mouse smoothing” so mouse movement lands closer to 1:1.
NetEase warned, then didn’t swing
A few months ago NetEase added a warning message for anyone altering config files. Bans, though, don’t appear to have followed.
This exploit will likely push the company toward something harsher for the whole config-editing crowd. The ideal outcome is both things at once: stop players from ending matches without penalty, and add more in-game options for people fighting performance issues or odd gameplay defaults.
Meanwhile, the content treadmill keeps running
Season 9.5 recently kicked off with The Hood, a tank character with guns. NetEase has pushed out a new character nearly every month, which keeps the hero shooter fresh and, often, very unbalanced.
Whether the culprit is EOMM, SBMM or something else entirely, players are in open revolt against whatever’s shaping their matches. Until this one gets patched, ranked is a coin flip you don’t get to finish.
