This is an open-world sandbox where staying alive means staying busy. You scavenge for supplies, hunt for food and build shelter in a world overrun by zombies.
Travel happens by land, sea and air. Along the way you’ll find hidden secrets and some genuinely peculiar NPCs, retrieve airdrops, scout deadzones and fight through hordes of the undead.
Feeling lucky? Other players are fair game in PvP. Or team up with them, split supplies and go gun down some bandits together.
It sits at a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam. Skipping it would be a mistake.
Zumbi Blocks 2 buries the way out underground
Launched back in 2023, Zumbi Blocks 2 Open Alpha is the official sequel to the 2013 free browser zombie game. You’re stuck on an island, cut off from the rest of humanity, and the secret to escaping is buried deep underground.
Dig for it and you’ll find the soil is hiding more than your ticket out. The undead start coming up too.
Play it in first or third person. Loot a procedurally generated city for supplies, take down powerful bosses and claw your way toward the exit in this multiplayer survival title.
Walking Zombie 2 has a karma system, and that changes things
The developers describe it as “a zombie single-player shooter in modern polygon graphics with rich RPG elements,” which undersells how much game is packed in here. It’s a free-to-play hit set during a zombie apocalypse, and you’re fighting zombies, bandits and dangerous boss monsters while working through story and side quests.
Level up your build. Master your skills. Buy and sell equipment as you settle in for what the game calls a “good old FPS with story.”
Then there’s the karma system, which means your choices follow you around. Red Dead Redemption 2 fans will recognize the feeling. This underrated gem currently sits at a ‘Very Positive’ rating on Steam.
No More Room in Hell is 2011 and still merciless
Age hasn’t dulled this one. All-out war has taken over society, millions of the walking dead are shambling through the streets and your odds are slim.
One bite ends everything. That’s the whole rule, and it’s the reason every corridor feels like a bad idea.
The game bills itself as a “co-operative realistic first-person survival horror modification for the Source Engine,” and it delivers on the co-op part: 1-8 players, dynamic maps, a survival mode and 30+ weapons to master.
Four games. Zero dollars. The only thing any of them will cost you is the hour you meant to spend doing something else.
