Sugar is beating the S&P 500 in 2026, and the reasons aren’t sweet

Sugar futures gained 21.5% in August. That’s the commodity’s best month since October 2010, when it rose 24%, and it’s enough to push the sweetener past the stock market for the year.

Sugar is up about 20% in 2026. The S&P 500 has managed nearly 13% over the same stretch. One of those numbers comes from earnings and rate expectations. The other comes from heat waves, a monsoon that didn’t show up and a country that stopped selling and started buying.

Europe’s beet crop broke first

The immediate trigger was weather in the European Union. William Osnato, Barchart director of commodity data research and analysis, said damage to Europe’s sugar-beet crop during a summer heat wave was one of the biggest immediate factors behind the move.

Sugar beets share ground and calendar with corn and wheat, which is why a heat wave that hits one hits all three.

“That’s been factored in over the last month. So a bunch of organizations lowered their production estimates,” Osnato said.

They did. The European Commission’s latest sugar balance sheet puts EU production down 19% to 13.4 million metric tons in the 2026/27 marketing year, from 16.6 million tons in 2025/26.

Everyone’s deficit number is different, and that’s the point

Citi projected a world deficit of 1.3 million metric tons in a Tuesday note. Green Pool Commodity Specialists put it at 3.2 million metric tons. That’s a wide spread, and it doesn’t matter as much as the direction.

“What is usually consistent is that they’re all going in the same direction,” Osnato said. “They’re all increasing the deficit.”

Citi called sugar a “highest-conviction bullish” market among agricultural commodities traded on the Intercontinental Exchange. The bank raised its three-month price target to 19 cents per pound, citing tightening inventories, India’s unexpected import program and deteriorating weather in India, Thailand and the EU.

India stopped being a seller

India, the world’s second-largest producer behind Brazil, recently authorized 1 million metric tons of duty-free raw-sugar imports. The government said the decision was meant to bolster domestic availability amid lower production, seasonal demand and rising prices.

The detail worth holding onto: Osnato said it followed two disappointing crops and was India’s first import authorization since the 2017-2018 season. Even if India buys only about half the authorized amount, he said, the move backs the view that supplies are tighter than previously estimated.

India restricting exports while stepping in as a buyer subtracts twice from what’s available to everyone else.

Rainfall in key Indian sugar-producing regions has run below normal. A weak monsoon drains reservoirs, and drained reservoirs discourage farmers from planting a crop as water-hungry as sugarcane the following season.

The forward-looking problem is a Pacific temperature reading

Osnato said El Niño, the global climate pattern that brings warmer ocean temperatures and severe weather, is likely “the biggest forward-looking concern.”

Here’s the number that gives that weight. The Climate Brink’s multi-model median forecast shows the temperature anomaly for the Niño 3.4 region in the Pacific peaking near 3.9 degrees Celsius, about 39 degrees Fahrenheit, in November. The threshold for a very strong El Niño is 2 degrees Celsius, or 35.6 degrees Fahrenheit.

Brazil, India and Thailand together account for roughly 70% of global sugar exports. Goldman Sachs said drought during the growing season could lower cane yields, while excessive rainfall during harvest could interrupt fieldwork and cut the sugar content of the cane. Unusually warm Pacific temperatures are also expected to bring erratic rainfall and water shortages across Thailand.

Brazilian mills can just decide to make something else

Brazil alone accounts for roughly half of world sugar exports, and its mills can shift their production mix between sugar and ethanol depending on which pays better. Right now energy prices are tilting that choice.

“When the price of oil increases, countries that produce ethanol from sugar have a higher incentive to produce more ethanol and export less sugar to the global market,” said Rob Johansson, director of economics and policy analysis at the American Sugar Alliance.

“With oil prices over $90 a barrel, countries like Brazil, which heavily subsidizes its ethanol industry, are producing more biofuel, lowering the amount of sugar available on the market and putting upward pressure on prices,” Johansson said.

Goldman Sachs adds a second-order version of the same problem. Corn is an important ethanol feedstock alongside sugarcane, so a weaker corn crop from El Niño-related drought could pull more sugarcane into ethanol production and leave less sugar for export.

Where this trade falls apart

Rain has delayed harvesting in Brazil, Osnato said, and some of that production could be recovered once the fields dry out. A rebound in Brazilian sugar content, or a faster harvest, is one of the clearest downside risks to the price.

The U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization Food Price Index also rose in August on broad-based increases, led by sugar.

“The surge reflected expectations of lower sugar beet yields in the European Union due to adverse weather, concerns over the impact of El Niño on production prospects in key producing countries in Asia, lower sugar production in Brazil, and India’s announcement of duty-free raw sugar imports,” the organization said in its recent report.

Four causes, one direction. And every one of them routes back through a single country.

“Brazil remains the market’s key balancing supplier, but weather-related execution risks during the remainder of the harvest leave little margin for error,” Citi analyst Arkady Gevorkyan wrote in a note.

If you’re watching one thing between now and November, watch how fast Brazilian fields dry. Everything else in this rally is already priced.
