Venom is still alive. Not in the comics sense, where he’s been dying and coming back since the Clinton administration, but in the far more fragile sense of a video game that leaked before it was ever announced and has spent months being quietly declared dead by the internet.
A new update on X says otherwise.
What NateTheHate said
Insider NateTheHate recently addressed the rumors head-on: “Venom is very much still in development upon last check. As to when it’ll be announced, I don’t know.”
That’s it. That’s the tease. And it was enough, because Forbes and NateTheHate are now saying the same thing after a stretch this year when the prevailing assumption was cancellation.
The context matters here. Marvel’s Venom from Insomniac was part of the studio’s 2023 mega-leak, which means fans have known about this game longer than they’ve known about most games that already came out.
The announcement nobody needs
One fan put the absurdity of the situation better than any headline could: “The funniest part about this game is that we’ve known it exists for so long that the official announcement is basically going to be a formality.”
Which is true. The reveal trailer will be a press release with orchestral music.
Not everyone’s thrilled about the delivery platform, though. Seemingly forgetting that Insomniac is a Sony studio, at least one fan had thoughts about the PS5 exclusivity: “Devs need to wise up and make games multi-platform, not just Sony. Unless they like sitting around with no sales.”
Why the wait makes sense
Spider-Man: The Great Web has been canceled. That was the “All-Star”-like game built around multiple Web Warriors, and its death cleared a lot of runway.
Meanwhile Insomniac is deep in the launch push for Wolverine, with the potential for a DLC run bringing in other stories. Getting all hands on that before starting the hype cycle for Venom is the obvious call.
So Venom waits. Fans have responded that they’re willing to wait, which is a level of patience the average comment section doesn’t usually extend to anything.
Don’t count on a PC port
Several Marvel’s Spider-Man games have landed on PC. That era looks finished. Sony seems done with the idea of PC ports, and several big Sony-published games aren’t coming over, period, including Ghost of Yotei and Saros.
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls appears to be the last of the lot, and only because of prior agreements.
The character earned this
Venom stopped being a Spider-Man accessory a long time ago. Since the ’90s and one of his first runs in Lethal Protector, he’s held down anti-hero status on his own terms, and fans have stayed enamored with him for decades in that complicated way that never quite resolves.
The symbiote suit has cycled through plenty of hosts beyond Eddie Brock. Marvel’s Spider-Man leaned into that, handing players control of Venom for a stretch and giving Peter access to the symbiote.
A Venom-filled romp, and not a finished one. The solo game is still in the works, still unannounced, still sitting there in plain sight where the leak left it.
