Casey Bloys won’t say it outright. He’ll say almost everything else.
The Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content spent Monday night at the streamer’s Emmys afterparty getting asked whether the network’s adaptation of Naughty Dog’s zombie franchise is wrapping up, and the answer he gave lands about as close to yes as a television executive gets without putting it in a press release.
“I think [showrunner] Craig [Mazin] has planned it as the final season,” Bloys said.
He also confirmed Season 3 arrives in 2027, without a specific date. He wouldn’t directly say it’s the last one. But he said what he said.
He’s been circling this for a year
Back in January, asked the same question, Bloys said “it certainly seems that way, but on decisions like that, we will defer to the showrunners. So you can ask them.” That’s the executive version of pointing at someone across the room and walking away.
So people asked them. And in May 2025, Mazin gave an answer that pointed the opposite direction entirely.
“There’s no way to complete this narrative in a third season,” Mazin said. “Hopefully, we’ll earn our keep enough to come back and finish it in a fourth. That’s the most likely outcome.”
The most likely outcome. That was 16 months ago. A lot of television has happened since.
Season 2 is the thing nobody’s saying out loud
Season 3 got announced before Season 2 had even premiered, which is the kind of confidence a network shows when the first season landed the way this one’s first season did. Critics were in. The reception was close to unanimous.
Then Season 2 arrived and the conversation changed. A lot of viewers took issue with Bella Ramsey’s portrayal of Ellie as an adult, and the season’s structural problem became impossible to ignore: it’s half a story, told at full length.
You don’t need a leaked memo to connect a wobbly second season to a network that suddenly stops fighting for a fourth.
Naughty Dog isn’t going anywhere
Here’s the part that complicates the obituary. The studio stepped back from its involvement with the HBO adaptation for Season 3, but stepping back isn’t the same as walking away from the property.
“It’s important for us to note that as the creator of the games, Naughty Dog is still the steward of this IP and even though this might be the end of this adaptation,” studio boss Neil Druckmann said earlier this month. “We’re not done with The Last of Us. There’s a couple projects in the works that, when the time is right, I’m very excited to talk about.”
Note the phrasing. This adaptation. Druckmann is already talking about the show in the past tense while Bloys is still doing the diplomatic shuffle.
What the studio is actually working on
Naughty Dog’s attention is on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which finished its performance capture shoot in August. It then skipped the September 2026 State of Play, and fans noticed. Loudly.
Which leaves 2027 as the year the show either finishes its story or runs out of runway trying. Mazin said a third season couldn’t hold the whole thing. His boss just said a third season is the plan.
One of them is going to be wrong, and only one of them signs off on the budget.
