A batch of GTA 5 source-code files from Rockstar’s 2023 breach, reportedly totaling around 200 GB, has surfaced publicly. Inside it: the cancelled Liberty City expansion, with an expanded layout and areas nobody outside Rockstar had seen.
Which is why people are now speculating that Liberty City ends up in GTA 6 instead.
None of this is confirmed. Rockstar hasn’t said a word about a Liberty City DLC, and the files are leaked material, not an announcement.
Where the layout came from
According to X user TJGM, who received the information from Ook, a developer and member of the World Travel modding team behind the Liberty City Preservation Project, the leaked files include an expanded layout of GTA 5’s planned Liberty City expansion. It was reconstructed using shoreline data.
TJGM claimed Rockstar likely pushed the Liberty City DLC to GTA 6. That’s a claim, not a confirmation.
The leaked layout also looks expanded from GTA 4’s Liberty City, which already felt huge for its time. And the new areas in the files suggest Rockstar made decent progress before pulling the plug.
GTA Online ate the expansion
The reason it died is the reason most Rockstar single-player DLC died. Thanks to GTA Online and its unwavering support, the company eventually cancelled development on the expansion.
But the math looks different now. Recent reports suggest a GTA 6 online launch in 2027, which gives Rockstar a window it didn’t have a decade ago.
Take-Two has confirmed GTA Online support after GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026. That leaves room for a major Liberty City DLC, at least structurally.
Leonida is already enormous without it
Rockstar could still scrap the project and focus on Leonida. Its reported progress implies it may not be off the table just yet, but reported progress on a cancelled expansion isn’t a roadmap.
For now, Rockstar is focusing on making Leonida the biggest GTA map ever. The GTA 6 map is said to be 2x bigger than GTA 5 and 3x bigger than Red Dead Redemption 2.
So even with zero Liberty City, the thing is already enormous.
If they did make a Liberty City DLC, support for the game would go beyond what Rockstar originally did with GTA 5’s campaign. A second city, bolted onto a map that’s already double the last one.
