Rockstar Games hasn’t said anything official about GTA 6’s multiplayer. The CEO of Twitch has.
Dan Clancy claims to know “a few things” about the online portion of Grand Theft Auto VI, and in a recent interview with Bloomberg he put a year on it: 2027. That’s his claim, not a Rockstar announcement. The studio still hasn’t discussed the multiplayer component at all.
Grand Theft Auto VI is expected to launch November 19 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, following years of anticipation. Rockstar describes the new chapter as the “next great single-player experience,” which tells you where the launch-day focus sits. Everybody wants to know about the other half anyway, or more precisely, about the new GTA Online.
What Clancy actually said
Clancy said he has spent significant time with Rockstar Games and knows the multiplayer will arrive in 2027. His words to Bloomberg:
“We’ve spent a lot of time with Rockstar and we know their plans. We’ve also helped them think through exactly how it can collaborate and interact with our content creators. With GTA 6, we expect to see a massive surge (in numbers), but next year, when the multiplayer launches, that surge will be even greater.”
Worth sitting with that for a second. This is a platform executive talking up viewership on his own platform, describing plans he says he was shown privately. It’s an unverified secondhand report, not a date from Rockstar or Take-Two, and nobody at either company has backed it up.
The GTA V playbook doesn’t apply
Here’s the part that makes 2027 land strangely. Grand Theft Auto Online launched October 1, 2013, just two weeks after Grand Theft Auto V arrived September 17, 2013.
Two weeks.
If Clancy’s timing is right, the wait this time stretches well past that. You’d be playing the single-player campaign for a good while before anyone hands you a lobby and a friends list.
And Rockstar has said nothing to confirm or deny any of it, which means the only number on the table right now belongs to a man who runs a streaming service.
The old one isn’t going anywhere
None of this leaves a gap, really. Since its 2013 debut, GTA Online has received dozens of updates packed with new missions, heists, businesses, vehicles and activities.
It’s been running for over a decade. Whatever 2027 does or doesn’t bring, that server is still up tonight, still selling you a garage you don’t need.
