Smoketail doesn’t roar. That’s the pitch, and it’s a good one. The newest dragon in Game of Thrones: Dragonfire is called the Veilflame, and she wins fights with smoke and illusions before anyone draws a sword.
The update was announced on Sept. 23. It adds Smoketail to the roster of the mobile 4X strategy war game, which has been climbing the charts for Android users since it came out earlier this year.
A dragon who’d rather mess with your head
Most dragons in this universe are about fire and terror. Smoketail is about confusion. The official blog post framing her release makes that clear from the first line.
“Smoketail , the Veilflame, has transcended the simple art of concealment,” the official blog post said.
According to that post, hiding a battlefield in smoke isn’t enough for her anymore. She conjures phantom valleys, false armies and ghostly cries to break her enemies before the fighting even starts. The lore then gives you a taste of what that looks like in practice.
“When Lord Wendryn’s host marched on Hornwood, they found the land twisted by visions: familiar woods turned to ash, kin whispered from the trees, and every path led only to confusion and fire. None who entered emerged unchanged. Smoketail does not roar—she unravels. Her illusions beguile, her smoke deceives, and those caught within rarely know truth from trap until it’s too late.”
How to get her, and what she does
You can claim Smoketail when you enter the campaign “The Dragon’s Divide.” Her kit mixes steady fire damage with self-preservation, so she’s built to stay in the fight rather than burn out fast.
The blog post lays out her full sheet: abilities, habits, affinities and star ratings. The short version? She may not be the strongest dragon in your army. But she’s the most intelligent one, and that lets her spot weaker enemies on the battlefield and swing a fight your way.
That’s a fitting design for a dragon whose whole personality is misdirection. Brains over brawn, in a franchise where brawn usually wins.
What Dragonfire is going for
Dragonfire pulls lore from both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. You lead your House through conquest, diplomacy and dragon warfare, building an empire, raising a dragon army and fighting real-time battles across Westeros with the Iron Throne as the prize.
The game gets regular updates, and they tend to pick up when new episodes of House of the Dragon are airing. Smoketail is the latest example of that steady drip of new content.
Westeros keeps getting more crowded on your phone
Dragonfire isn’t alone. Game of Thrones: Legends, another mobile title, has been doing well since it launched in 2024. And Game of Thrones: War for Westeros, a strategy RPG, is expected to arrive some time in 2027.
None of that is surprising. The show ended in May 2019 with a finale that didn’t land with a lot of people, but the fandom never went anywhere. HBO kept going with George R.R. Martin’s world, adding House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms after Game of Thrones wrapped its eight-year run.
If you somehow missed all of it, the original series is based on Martin’s ongoing A Song of Ice and Fire novels. It’s a fantasy drama set across Westeros and Essos, following noble families like the Starks, Lannisters and Targaryens as they fight over the Iron Throne.
Meanwhile, something far worse than any of them was stirring up North. The undead didn’t care who sat on the throne.
Smoketail probably wouldn’t either. She’d just make them walk in circles through the ash, listening to their own families whisper from the trees.
