In Brief:

  • Errata Studio released a free demo of Primal Tactica on Steam on Oct. 5, a single-player roguelike autobattler built with licensed Illuvium ILV $4.10 ▲ +4.9% IP.
  • The game has no web3 elements. The full version is listed for Early Access in Q4 2026.
  • Illuvium co-founder Kieran Warwick said Illuvium gets the bulk of the game’s revenue. It’s one of four products the studio named for launch this year while cutting wages to extend its runway.

Errata Studio has released a free demo of Primal Tactica on Steam. The roguelike autobattler uses creatures and IP licensed from Illuvium.

The demo went live Oct. 5. The game’s account pitched it in a post on X as “Pokémon meets TFT and Slay the Spire.”

“Recruit and evolve your Primals, stack synergies and build a game-breaking team,” the studio said in the post. “Enjoy it? Wishlist the main game!”

Illuvium signs off

Illuvium promoted the release from its own account and said Errata built the game independently.

“Familiar creatures. A whole new challenge,” Illuvium said in the post. “Build your Primals, stack synergies, discover powerful Relics and find game-breaking combinations.”

Illuvium had flagged the demo the week before, describing Primal Tactica as “a single-player roguelike autobattler built with licensed Illuvium IP.” It asked players to sign up for playtests through the game’s Discord.

Illuvium’s name doesn’t appear on either Steam page. Errata Studio Ltd is listed as both developer and publisher.

What’s in the game

Players roll and evolve a roster of more than 200 Primals, stack their synergies and equip them with Relics and Augments. Then they position the team for turn-based fights that resolve automatically.

Matching three of a kind evolves a Primal into a stronger form. Between fights, players pick routes across a branching map, choosing between safer paths and ones guarded by tougher enemies.

The Steam listing promises more than 50 Relics with run-altering, team-wide effects and more than 50 Augments that change individual Primals’ skills, stats and effects. The studio says runs can produce “thousands of possible builds.”

The demo is single-player and Windows-only, with six supported languages. The full game’s page lists 10 languages, including Korean, Brazilian Portuguese, Russian and Simplified Chinese.

Early Access in Q4

The full game is marked “Coming Soon To Early Access” with a Q4 2026 window. Errata plans to stay in Early Access for six months to a year, and the listing says the price will go up at full release.

The store page also carries an AI disclosure. Errata said every Primal design is hand-crafted but that some external 2D assets may use generative AI.

The licensing deal

The project comes out of a deal Warwick first described in February. Illuvium Arena (official site)’s head designer asked to take the IP and ship a version on Steam without the web3 elements, with Illuvium keeping most of the revenue after platform fees.

In an Aug. 21 update, Warwick said the build was nearly finished and would debut at Steam Next Fest in October.

In the same update he named Primal Tactica as one of four products launching this year. The others are a Celebrations collection for Illuvium Beyond, Beyond Chaos and Loadout.

The update came alongside another round of cost cuts. Warwick said six months of reductions and a further wage cut had restored more than 12 months of operating runway. The Overworld MMO is now the studio’s main remaining bet, and he gave no release date for it.

February’s post had targeted December 2026 for Overworld.

Warwick was blunt about who gets paid from the Steam spinoff.

“Illuvium receives the lion’s share of the revenue,” Warwick said.
