This is a research-based review, not a play log: nobody on our team claims hours in Calamity here. We read our catalog entry, 1 official page, the official gameplay guides and store listings, 7 forum or blog pages, the official marketplace and getting-started guide, the official update history and news coverage, NFT market data, team, funding and audit records (read on 2026-11-02). What is Calamity?

Calamity is a free-to-play 2D sandbox MMORPG from Tempest Labs, and it is live as of November 2026. The game sits across the building, MMORPG and PvP genres. It runs on Ronin, the Ethereum-linked chain first built for Axie Infinity AXS $0.8442 ▼ -10.3%.

Calamity is a free download from the Epic Games Store on Windows or Mac. Its design looks back to the classic era of the genre: a top-down pixel-art open world that you share with everyone else on your server.

You pick a class and build your character through skills and gear. Then you decide how much time goes into PvE (exploring and clearing dungeons) and how much goes into real-time PvP against other players.

Calamity’s economy runs through the player market. Rewards come from what players make, find and sell to each other, so any gear on sale is gear another player earned, and the game has no pay-to-win storefront. WYRM is the currency of that economy. The roadmap planned a token generation event, a play-to-airdrop campaign and the Wyrm Tribute update, and it set WYRM up as the settlement asset for a peer-to-peer auction house. The game’s own site asks players to support the MMO with a Factory and get new perks together.

Gameplay experience

Calamity is a real-time, top-down action MMORPG. Your weapon sets your class, and fights turn on which skills you pick and how well you aim them, in dungeons and in PvP across a shared world. Its 2D pixel art borrows from the classic era of the genre.

How a match plays

A session in Calamity starts with a weapon. The game takes cues from Diablo and Albion Online, and its combat is skill-based.

Each weapon holds up to four active abilities, and a dedicated NPC lets you reroll specific skills. Single-target abilities lock onto the foe you choose. Directional and area-of-effect skills need careful aim, so part of every fight depends on your own accuracy.

With a weapon chosen, you head into challenging dungeons, alone or with friends, and gear up from the loot you find. Play is split into short competitive cycles: fast events that mix dungeon crawling, competitive PvP and trading, where every decision counts.

Modes

  • Solo play has story-driven campaigns.
  • Dungeons support three-player online co-op.
  • PvP pits you against other players in real time, alongside the PvE content.
  • A guild system is built for group play and community building.

Progression and difficulty

Calamity’s characters are built through flexible weapon-based classes and deep itemization, as the Steam store page lists.

Early events reset progress when each one ended, which kept the field level and rewarded skill, strategy and trading decisions.

Controls and platforms

Controller support is a sore point. One player on the Steam discussion board wrote: “This game should be played on a controller but not even giving us options to use one from the start?”

Calamity’s audio is in English.

Getting started

Calamity does not run in a browser: you install it on your PC or Mac.

Playing requires a game account and a Ronin wallet. In October 2026, Ronin sent players to register at app.calamity.online, eGamers.io reported.

Calamity’s paid path goes through NFTs. Dragon Rings are the Founders collection, sold on Ronin Market, and holders get onchain and in-game perks, including boosts inside Calamity, eGamers.io reported. Players got Rings by burning Artifacts. On November 2, 2026, the cheapest listing in the Calamity: Artifacts collection on OpenSea was 0.03959 ETH, about $90.

The first steps in Calamity, in order:

  • Download Calamity from the Epic Games Store.
  • Register at app.calamity.online.
  • Connect a Ronin wallet.

Graphics, art and sound

Calamity looks like an old-school MMORPG on purpose: if you grew up on 2D online RPGs, it’s built to look like them.

Art style and world

Calamity is set in a colourful 2D top-down world, one open world that you share with everyone else on your server.

Economy and earning reality

Calamity’s player-run economy is small. As of November 2, 2026, its NFT collections had 1,323 holders and a recorded trading volume of 6.64 ETH: a thin pool of buyers. Selling gear you find or craft depends on a market of about a thousand wallets.

Tradable items sit in the Calamity: Artifacts collection on OpenSea, priced in ETH. The game itself is a free download, so you don’t need the collection to start playing. You’d buy into it to own or resell gear. Calamity’s other money-in route is the Factory. Players can support the MMO with a Factory and gain new perks together, a shared purchase that pays out in perks for the community.

Team, funding and whitepaper

Tempest Labs builds Calamity, and the studio’s most visible backing so far is a public spotlight from Ronin, the chain the game runs on.

That spotlight centred on the game’s Founders NFTs. egamers.io reported the post and its claim that each Ring gives holders onchain and in-game benefits, including boosts inside Calamity.

For a holder, that means a Dragon Ring is more than a collectible: Ronin’s own description ties it to in-game boosts. For a player without one, it means some players get advantages that come from owning a Founders NFT.

Community pulse

Calamity’s public community is small and quiet. Most of what you can see is the developer replying to players on X and Ronin promoting the game to its own users. Players post on the Steam forum, but those threads get no replies.

One Steam thread, titled Worst choices possible, holds a controller complaint and shows 0 comments. Another Steam post from December 30, 2025 is one line of enthusiasm, “I will purchase and consume to my hearts content!”, and it has no replies either.

A further Steam thread asks whether Calamity is actually a very old game. You won’t find players talking to each other in it.

Calamity’s developers answer on X. A roadmap post from the Calamity account put Echo Rifts and Dragon Dominion PvP in Q4 2026 and an open beta in January or February 2027. eGamers reported that when a player asked about the new content in the replies, the account answered: “It is in testing mode, and the game modes are incoming 🫡”. Ronin Network also replied to the post, and the Calamity account wrote back: “We hope that players will love the updates!”

Roadmap and current status

Calamity is live on Ronin and is being rebuilt. On October 29, 2026 the studio said it is turning the game into a full MMO built around one shared open world, with an open beta planned for January or February 2027, eGamers reported. The update pace is growing: 12 dated updates and news items in the 12 months to November 2, 2026, against 2 in the 12 months before. Calamity is #49 on our ranked list of crypto games.

The last 12 months

The Icebound Season playtest ran December 19 to 23, 2025, and eGamers reported that it added a 3v3 PvP Arena and debuted a mobile version. Sunforge Season followed from June 25 to August 20, 2026. It ran for eight weeks with a $20,000 prize pool paid in WYRM, Gold and NFTs. eGamers reported that the season closed with servers live and no wipe.

After Sunforge, the studio listed five next steps, none of them dated: a Factory and cosmetics mint, a new biome and major dungeons update, an off-season event, community PvP tournaments and a new game mode in development. On September 28, 2026, Ronin named Dragon Rings as the Founders NFT collection of the game, which moved to Ronin from Treasure. On October 17, 2026, Ronin said Calamity had teased a new map with no date or details, and pointed players to sign up at app.calamity.online.

Roadmap to the open beta and WYRM

The new roadmap has six phases: Calamity Rifts, Dragon Dominion, Talents & Skills, the beta test, the WYRM token generation event, then the main release.

The token has moved slowest. Calamity’s Q3 2025 roadmap put the token generation event after a play-to-airdrop campaign and a public sale restricted to NFT holders. For a holder, that leaves WYRM without a launch date.

Back in September 2025, Calamity ran a Guild System playtest with a Scholarship and Sponsors system, a 3 million WYRM reward pool and a starting Wyrm Tribute pool of 2,000 RON / 1 million Gold, as eGamers reported at the time.

Risks

Calamity’s main risk is that it isn’t finished. Anything you put in today is tied to a game whose final form isn’t live.

Calamity moved to Ronin from Treasure. According to eGamers, the first step of that move had players burn their Artifact to get a Dragon Ring. A burn is one-way: holders had to give up the old NFT to bring their stake across.

Dragon Rings also carry boosts inside Calamity. Ronin is pointing buyers to that Founders NFT on Ronin Market. The NFT’s price depends on demand there, and the in-game boosts are what holders get for it.

Calamity’s roadmap has its own risk. eGamers reported on October 30, 2026 that the Calamity account set Echo Rifts and Dragon Dominion PvP for Q4 2026 and the open beta for Jan/Feb 2027, and that the account said the new modes were still in testing. Until those modes ship, you’re buying into plans.

Calamity has no published whitepaper or audit report. The rules for WYRM, Factories and the NFTs are spread across announcements and the game itself, with no single reference document.

What to watch next

  • Upcoming: Calamity rebuilds as open-world MMO, targets January or February 2027 open beta
  • Upcoming: Calamity Previews Upcoming Map While Ronin Urges Players to Register
  • Upcoming: Calamity teases new map as Ronin pushes sign-ups

Verdict: is Calamity worth your time?

Calamity is worth a look if you want a free, old-school pixel-art MMORPG on Ronin and you’re fine playing a game that’s in the middle of a rebuild. If you came to earn, skip it for now. On October 29, 2026 the studio said it is becoming a full MMO built around one shared open world, and eGamers reported that the open beta is planned for January or February 2027.

Who it suits

Calamity suits players who like dungeon runs and real-time PvP and want to try them without paying up front. Calamity logged 12 dated updates and news items in the last 12 months, against 2 in the 12 months before, so new content is arriving faster than it used to.

The Icebound Season playtest ran December 19 to 23, 2025 and added a new 3v3 PvP Arena and the first mobile version, eGamers reported.

Who should skip it

Skip Calamity if earning is the goal. The WYRM token generation event is still a roadmap phase, one of six in the plan, and it sits after the beta test and before the main release.

Skip it too if pay-for-advantage puts you off. Dragon Rings are the Founders NFTs, and holders get boosts inside Calamity, so the free download doesn’t put every player on the same footing.

What would move the score

Calamity’s score goes up if Echo Rifts and Dragon Dominion PvP arrive in Q4 2026 as targeted and the open beta lands in January or February 2027. Ronin said Calamity has teased a new map, with no date given.

The score goes down if those targets slip. None of the five items the studio listed after Sunforge had a date, from the Factory and cosmetics mint to a new game mode. It also goes down if the Founders boosts turn into a real edge over free players.

Comparable games

Pick Calamity if what you want is a top-down pixel-art MMORPG with dungeons, PvP and a player-run market.
