That’s a big day for NC (NCSoft). The original Aion is one of the most fondly remembered MMO RPGs around, and the sequel is built on Unreal Engine 5 with a next-gen experience as the pitch.

A sequel that’s also a reboot

Aion 2 is doing double duty. It’s a direct sequel and a reboot of the franchise at the same time, which is a tricky combination to pull off.

The story goes back to the Aion universe you already know. The Asmodians and Elyos are at the center again, though both have been updated. (Longtime players, brace yourselves.)

Combat is still action-oriented. Skills and combos drive everything, whether you’re grinding through PvE or fighting other players in PvP.

NC is making a bold claim about the world

NC recently said this is the most expansive and uninterrupted world it has ever built, with deep exploration and a lot of content to work through. That’s a big promise from a studio with this much MMO history.

The rest is what you’d expect from the genre. There are dungeons, bosses and guilds, plus a lot of room to build up your character.

But NCSoft wants you to know this isn’t just the old game with a fresh coat of paint. The goal is a more modern, more accessible game that still holds on to the quirks that made the original Aion stand out.

Early players seem mostly happy

Right now the game sits at “Mostly Positive” on Steam, from over 3,000 reviews. That number will probably move as more players log in, so treat it as a first impression.

Base access is free. If you want more, there are several paid packs with extra content, and the Founder’s Pack costs 21.25 euros.

The countdown is already running

Pre-loading is open now, so you can get the download done early. In Greece, the game unlocks roughly seven hours from the time this was published.

So you’ve got time to clear some hard drive space, decide whether you’re Asmodian or Elyos and make peace with how short tonight’s sleep is going to be.
