Long before GLaDOS was promising you cake, there was SHODAN. She’s colder, crueler and a lot more interested in wiping out the human race than in running you through test chambers.
She’s the villain of System Shock 2, and right now you can own the game’s 25th Anniversary Remaster for nothing. The Epic Games Store is giving it away until Thursday, October 8 at 11:00 AM EST. If you’ve never played the game that taught Ken Levine how to scare people, this is the cheapest homework you’ll ever get.
Where BioShock got its nerve
Levine, who went on to create BioShock, cut his teeth on post-apocalyptic horror here. Irrational Games and Looking Glass Studios developed System Shock 2, and it first came out in 1999. It earned its classic status the hard way, through masterful storytelling and stretches of pure dread.
For a while, though, it looked like the game might just fade away. After Looking Glass Studios shut down, nobody knew what would happen to it. Then Nightdive Studios stepped in and released the remaster on June 26, 2025.
You wake up and everyone’s dead
The setup is about as bleak as it gets. You come out of cryo sleep aboard an FTL spaceship called the Von Braun and find that something has gone horribly wrong. Your crew is long dead. Mutants and robots now stalk the hallways where your crewmates used to be.
The culprit is the ship’s AI, SHODAN, who has gone rogue, taken over the ship and decided humanity needs to be eradicated. And yes, stopping her is your job.
It’s a first-person psychological horror game, and resources are tight enough that people often call it a survival shooter. Every bullet counts. You’ll feel that.
What a year of polish bought
The remaster brings the 1999 original up to modern standards. You get better performance, optimized controller support, upgraded visuals for characters, weapons and environments, and reworked animations.
Modern hardware gets some love too. The game now runs at up to 144 fps and supports ultra-widescreen displays, so it won’t look like it’s being piped through a CRT in your parents’ basement.
Nightdive also added 50 achievements, handy if you want a challenge or just a fresh excuse to revisit an old favorite. Mod support got better as well, which matters because modders have kept this game alive for more than two dozen years.
Bring three friends into the nightmare
The headline feature is the rebuilt cross-play co-op multiplayer. Up to four players can run the story mode together, fighting mutants and robots and trying to stop the AI apocalypse before SHODAN gets her way.
Fair warning: multiplayer was buggy at launch. Those problems have reportedly been ironed out since then, and it’s now a workable co-op experience. (Dread is more fun with company. Mostly.)
This remaster is the best way to play System Shock 2, for returning fans and first-timers alike. It’s free on the Epic Games Store until 11:00 AM EST on Thursday, October 8.
After that, SHODAN goes back to charging admission.
