One word. That’s all it took.

A player on X/Twitter told CD Projekt Red community and social media manager Marcin Łukaszewski they hoped the surprise Songs of the Past expansion would bring more Gwent. Łukaszewski replied: “Confirmed!”

That was enough to set off a celebration among the people who spent 2015 ignoring monster contracts to shake down every innkeeper in Velen for a Foltest card.

The card game that outlived its own spinoff

Gwent started life as a side activity inside the third entry in the Witcher series. It became a standalone spinoff in 2017. In 2025 it turned into a real-life tabletop product. That’s an unusual run for something originally designed as filler between contracts.

Here’s how CD Projekt Red describes it: “In Gwent, gamers clash with friends in fast-paced duels that combine skill-based play with bluffing, and careful deck construction. The game is played over a best-of-three series of rounds, as players unleash their hand by slinging spells and diverse units with special abilities, and use clever tricks to deceive their opponents.”

Plenty of studios have tried to bottle that same in-game-card-game lightning. Few of the imitators lasted. Gwent did, which is probably the whole reason it’s coming back.

A 10-year gap between expansions

The Witcher 3’s last expansion, Blood and Wine, arrived in 2016. Songs of the Past is targeting 2027, so by the time it lands the wait will have stretched past a decade.

And this isn’t a small drop of side content. CD Projekt Red has framed it as a full add-on for the game’s story, teasing earlier this year that it will function as a prologue.

So temper the fantasy slightly. It won’t be all Gwent, all the time. But for anyone who’s been waiting to sit down for another round, one word from Łukaszewski was plenty.

What the players are saying

The reaction ran about how you’d expect from a fanbase that treats a card game as the main quest.

“Well, I hope whatever the main plot of Songs of the Past is, it’s not urgent. Because Geralt’s got more Gwenting to do, baby!” one player wrote.

Another kept it shorter: “Let’s gooooooo!!!!!!!”

The Witcher 4 is still on the board

CD Projekt Red isn’t done with monster hunting. Earlier today the studio confirmed The Witcher 4 remains on track for sometime in 2028.

The Witcher 3 launched in 2015 to heavy praise. Doug Cockle’s gravelly delivery as Geralt sold the story, the RPG systems pulled in every stripe of fantasy fan, and a lot of people will tell you Gwent is what actually kept them playing.

More details on Songs of the Past are less than 24 hours out. The developers have already scheduled a fuller look during gamescom 2026 Opening Night Live.

Until then, Geralt has decks to build.
