In Brief:

  • DIFC Courts launch document verification on Avalanche blockchain.
  • System uses non-transferable NFTs for authenticity checks of court records.
  • This initiative aims to expedite cross-border document validation.

DIFC Courts adopt Avalanche for document verification

The Dubai International Financial Centre Courts (DIFC Courts) began using Avalanche to verify court documents as of October 14, 2026. This new system allows court orders and hearing records to be credentialed on-chain, enabling global verification of their authenticity within seconds.

Court documents themselves remain off the blockchain, with only their cryptographic hash and unique NFT-based credential recorded on the Avalanche C-Chain. “Confidence in the authenticity of a court document should not depend on geography,” Justice Omar Al Mheiri, Director of DIFC Courts, said.

Verification process

Each document issued by the courts generates a cryptographic fingerprint known as a hash. This hash is tied to the unique credential stored on-chain. Recipients can authenticate the document against its credential; if any modification occurs, the verification fails.

The NFT credentials are non-transferable and lack ownership rights or monetary value. Their sole purpose is to confirm the origin and integrity of the associated document. Avalanche’s fast settlement times, under one second, enhance the verification process.

Al Mheiri stated the system allows recipients to swiftly verify the source and integrity of documents.

Focus on cross-border disputes

The system addresses delays in cross-border authentication for banks, government authorities, and businesses needing document verification. Traditional manual checks can take days or weeks, which this initiative seeks to reduce.

These credentials are particularly beneficial for parties without connections to the UAE. In 2025, 31% of claims at the Courts of First Instance were from businesses selecting the DIFC Courts through contract clauses.

Designed by Deca4 Advisory, the courts’ blockchain technology partner since 2022, the new system complements existing services, including the Notary Service. The document verification system operates independently on Avalanche but is part of a broader blockchain application at DIFC, which previously utilized Hedera for its Notary Service.

DIFC Courts by the numbers

Avalanche reports that the DIFC Courts processed over 2,500 claims valued at $5.1 billion in 2025. The courts’ own statistics reveal a total claim value across all divisions of AED 18.6 billion, alongside a significant rise in case numbers.

The Courts of First Instance saw 173 claims totaling AED 7.6 billion, while the Arbitration Division recorded 53 claims worth AED 4.95 billion. The Civil and Commercial Division processed 117 claims valued at AED 2.6 billion, and enforcement claims climbed to AED 10.9 billion across 341 cases.

The courts operate predominantly in digital format, issuing 99% of hearings electronically and witnessing registered wills increase by 22%.

Background on the DIFC Courts

Established in 2004, the DIFC Courts serve as an independent common law jurisdiction in Dubai. In 2011, they opened to international businesses and have continued evolving their legal framework.

They provide services beyond commercial dispute resolution, including a Digital Economy Court and a Mediation Service Centre. Currently, the courts are implementing a five-year Growth Strategy, targeting over 20 initiatives across strategic areas.

Avalanche’s ongoing initiatives in the UAE

The document verification effort is part of Avalanche’s broader strategy to integrate into UAE government services. Collaborating with Deca4 and Ava Labs, the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) aims to incorporate Avalanche as a foundational element of the UAE PASS Digital Vault.

Implications for Web3 gaming

While court documents and gaming may seem unrelated, both utilize non-transferable NFTs to establish authenticity. The DIFC Courts’ application echoes practices in Web3 games, where such technologies validate achievements and player credentials.

Avalanche hosts multiple gaming networks, boosting infrastructure credibility. As the DIFC Courts dealt with AED 18.6 billion in claims in 2025, their trust in the same public C-Chain strengthens the foundation for game developers operating in the region.
