Apple TV raised its prices again. Then it announced the September lineup, and the timing stopped looking like a coincidence.
The month leans hard on Apple TV Originals, and the casting is stacked: Ryan Reynolds, Kenneth Branagh, Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Gary Oldman. Here’s what’s actually worth your attention.
Ryan Reynolds behind enemy lines, Branagh with a soft spot for America
Mayday is an action comedy set during the height of the Cold War. Reynolds plays Lieutenant Troy “Assassin” Kelly, a hot-shot U.S. Navy pilot who winds up stranded on the wrong side of the map.
The man who finds him is ex-KGB agent Nikolai Ustinov, played by Branagh, who happens to hold a certain reverence for American culture. What follows is an unlikely buddy spy movie that mixes action with comedy.
A dispatcher takes a call he can’t let go
The first new Apple TV series of the month is a six-part adaptation of Ryan David Jahn’s novel The Dispatcher. Patrick Brammall stars as former detective Ian Ridley, who is still pretty messed up since his daughter Maggie disappeared more than a decade ago.
Ridley works as a police dispatcher now. Then a teenage girl calls in distress, and he thinks the voice could belong to his long lost daughter.
You’ll probably recognize Brammall as the Australian love interest in this year’s Devil Wears Prada 2.
Slow Horses is already safe through Season 7
Slow Horses starts its sixth season this month and has already been officially renewed for Season 7. If you’ve somehow avoided it this long, there’s no wrong moment to start.
Oldman is essentially extending his work from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy across an entire series, and he’s been doing it since 2022. The latest Season 6 trailer confirms Olivia Cooke’s fan favorite character is back.
McConaughey and Harrelson finally do something with the rumor
You’ve heard the theory floating around for years that McConaughey and Harrelson are secretly related. Neither has ever publicly confirmed it.
So they made a show about it instead. Brothers is a comedy in which the two play fictional versions of themselves, digging into their friendship and what happens when the secret that they might be brothers gets out.
The premiere drops the first two episodes at once, then new episodes arrive every Wednesday.
What’s already running
The new stuff isn’t the whole month. Apple TV keeps rolling out episodes of Ted Lasso Season 4, Dark Matter Season 2 and Women in Blue.
And this Friday brings the Silo Season 3 finale, which sets up the sci-fi series’ final season next year.
