It took four AI agents 605 deaths, 2,783 JavaScript programs and 27 hours and 14 minutes to kill the Ender Dragon. Nobody helped them.

A Google DeepMind team ran the four agents on Gemini 4 Argon. It’s the first time Minecraft has been beaten without human input, in a run that was fully autonomous from start to finish.

The world was randomly generated. The team didn’t assign roles or strategies, and the agents got no Minecraft-specific tools. Everything after the drop-in was up to them.

The agents organized themselves

They split up the work on their own. They warned each other about threats and recovered items from teammates who died, which happened often.

They also logged their mistakes in a shared memory. Over the full session, the four of them exchanged 229 chat messages. That’s not a lot of talking for a 27-hour project, and you could read it two ways: efficient coordination, or a team that mostly worked alone and checked in when it had to.

A $1,620 dragon

The whole run cost $1,620 at the standard Gemini 4 Argon price, which takes effect in 2027. Spread across 605 deaths, that’s a pricey way to learn not to dig straight down.

The cost matters more than the novelty. Only a few years ago, beating games like this took AI systems built for the job and trained from scratch. Minecraft is the latest game to fall to general-purpose agentic models, which had no game-specific setup and wrote their own code as they went.
