Despite the "post-apocalyptic survival" framing that follows it around, Last Expedition is more precisely a team-based PvPvE extraction shooter. Squads of four land on the hostile planet Aura, hunt down three alien fragments to unlock a central artifact, and then have to physically carry it back to an evacuation ship while the planet's wildlife and rival squads try to take it from them. The loop is closer to a round-based objective shooter than to open-ended scavenging.
Its strongest credential is pedigree: the project came out of Certain Affinity, a studio with deep first-person multiplayer experience, under a Gala Games publishing deal announced in late 2021. The extraction premise is a genuinely good fit for tradeable items, because gear you carry in is gear you can lose.
What works against it is time and access. Development has stretched across years of teasers and tech demos, and early playtests were gated behind node ownership rather than opened broadly, so public evidence of the moment-to-moment shooting remains thin.
It suits players who already hold Gala assets and enjoy high-stakes squad extraction play, and who are comfortable waiting on a long build.
