What is Shrapnel?

Shrapnel is a free-to-play, team-based extraction shooter from Neon Machine, available on Steam. Its premise: in 2038 the asteroid 38 Sigma strikes the moon, and the resulting meteorites bombard a 500-kilometre band of the Earth that becomes known as The Sacrifice Zone. Squads deploy into that zone to collect a substance called Sigma and extract with it. The development team's credits include work on Call of Duty, CS-GO, Halo, BioShock, Ghost of Tsushima and Forza.

How to play Shrapnel

The core loop is the extraction-shooter loop: drop in, gather Sigma under pressure from other squads, and get out alive with what you carried. Shrapnel ties that directly to progression — the more Sigma a team deposits, the stronger both the squad and its individual abilities become, so a successful extraction compounds rather than simply paying out once. Players field Operators, which are levelled for perks and carried between matches. The publisher's own figures put the game at 3.7 million sessions, 943,000 Sigma collected and 37 million shots fired.

Shrapnel tokenomics & earning

Shrapnel's economy is built on genuine item ownership rather than on a reward drip. Cosmetics and playable Operators are owned by players and traded on the Shrapnel Marketplace, where the site reports 384,000 items sold. Two in-game systems feed that market: a Printer, which crafts mystery rewards, and a Recycle Depot, which transforms items players no longer want into something else. The value a player accrues therefore sits in the Operators and cosmetics they hold and can sell, not in a per-match payout.
