Thirteen other Google products have crossed 1 billion monthly active users. None of them got there as fast as Gemini.

That’s the claim CEO Sundar Pichai made today, and it’s the kind of number that sounds inevitable until you remember how much online hostility Gemini has absorbed over the past two years. Google went all-in anyway. The bet is paying off, at least on the scoreboard that Google chose to show us.

What the billion actually counts

Here’s the part that gets glossed over in most coverage. Gemini is embedded in nearly every Google product now: it organizes your email in Gmail, summarizes documents in Drive, and drives AI Mode and AI Overviews in search, which are getting harder to dodge whether you want them or not.

None of that counts toward the 1 billion.

Pichai’s MAU figure covers people who opened the Gemini app or loaded the Gemini web interface to type a prompt or use Gemini Live. That’s it. Open it once in a month and you’re in the cohort. Those billion users are probably bumping into Gemini elsewhere too, but the metric doesn’t include it.

Sixty-three percent are talking, not typing

Josh Woodward, Google’s VP overseeing Gemini, filled in the usage details, and the voice number is the one worth sitting with: 63 percent of Gemini’s active users are using voice input, and a growing share of them are what Woodward calls “voice-only” users.

Of the people using Gemini Live, 20 percent are sharing camera feeds and screens with the robot to get help.

Students are in there too, and everyone knows it. Woodward said 38 percent of school-related requests include an attachment. Google’s response is a batch of new study tools due in the coming weeks.

150 million images a day, all watermarked, all suspect

Those billion users generate 150 million images every day. Woodward said businesses love these Nano Banana images for marketing materials, which is the official framing. The unofficial reality is that a lot of that volume is memes and jokes circulating the internet.

Every one carries a SynthID watermark. Whether that helps anybody tell what’s true a year from now is a separate question, and I wouldn’t bet on it.

The iOS number matters more than the Android one

Google has structural advantages here that no rival can buy. Virtually every Android phone shipping today includes the Gemini app plus a stack of features nudging people toward it. Distribution on that scale flatters any usage chart.

But more than 100 million of Gemini’s MAUs are on iOS, according to Woodward. Those people had to go find the app and install it themselves, alongside or instead of ChatGPT or Claude. That’s the number that isn’t explained away by preinstallation.

The spending underneath the milestone

Google doesn’t break out AI in its earnings reports. What we do know is that the company’s spending on AI infrastructure has pushed its cash flow into negative territory for the first time ever.

A lot of money is going into keeping these numbers climbing. Whether they stay up there is a different problem.

Where the cracks show

Google’s model progress through 2025 was hard to argue with. The sense now is that it may be hitting a wall.

The company has lost several key scientists and researchers in recent months, and DeepMind cofounder Demis Hassabis has stepped down from his leadership role. He’s still at Google, but reports suggest he isn’t especially interested in the hyperscaling approach the company is pursuing.

The shipping record tells a similar story. At I/O this year, Google promised Gemini 3.5 Pro, its latest frontier model, in June. June came and went with nothing. Last month the company said it was still working on Gemini 3.5 Pro and had already begun training Gemini 4. Reports indicate Google is unhappy with Gemini Pro’s coding performance, which lags behind OpenAI and Anthropic models. At this point it’s unclear whether Gemini 3.5 Pro ever ships at all.

Gemini remains capable enough for most people doing most things, and 1 billion MAUs is a genuine accomplishment regardless of how the counting works. But market dominance has a shelf life. If Gemini underperforms the competition long enough, the Android preinstall won’t be enough to hold the line, and the 100 million iOS users who chose to be there are exactly the ones who can leave.
