Konami has a date. August 27, £44.98/$49.99, and pre-orders are already open.
That’s when METAL GEAR SOLID: MASTER COLLECTION Vol.2 lands on Steam, and it’s the closest thing to a real Metal Gear plan we’ve gotten since Hideo Kojima walked out of Konami after three decades to chase other projects.
What’s actually in the box
Vol.2 is the follow-up to the compilation of the same name, and this time the headliners are Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD Collection version).
There’s a digital soundtrack bundled in. And Metal Gear: Ghost Babel, which is the kind of deep-cut inclusion that tells you somebody at Konami still cares.
Konami’s own pitch
Here’s how the developer described what fans can expect:
“Immerse yourself in the Metal Gear series, the pinnacle of “stealth action” where you can infiltrate and elude your enemies to complete missions. This collection is the second installment of the definitive Metal Gear Master Collection. Vol. 2 includes Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots and Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker (HD Collection version).”
“Each game includes a Screenplay Book containing the text from the respective title, plus a Master Book offering detailed insights into the story and characters. Also, as purchase bonuses for the collection edition, it includes METAL GEAR Ghost Babel-the series first title for handheld consoles, released in 2000-and Metal Gear Solid: Digital Soundtrack Vol.2, featuring numerous iconic tracks that enhanced Snake’s missions, ranging from BGM used in the games to vocal songs.”
Screenplay Books and Master Books for each game. That’s archival-grade packaging, not a lazy port dump.
The bigger question nobody at Konami is answering
Metal Gear Solid has one of the most up in the air futures of any major video game IP. Konami hasn’t expressly stated what they plan to do with it, which is either patience or paralysis depending on how charitable you’re feeling.
Leaning toward patience, honestly. The first real move after a figure that size exits needs proper consideration, and the series has too many fans worldwide for Konami to simply abandon it. Taking their time is understandable.
Meanwhile, you get something to play.
The rest of the Konami calendar
Silent Hill: Townfall launches September 24, 2026. The action platformer Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse arrives October 15.
Beyond those, the company is tight-lipped. But don't be surprised if Metal Gear returns in a new guise.
Until then, there’s Snake in 2008, Snake in Costa Rica, and a handheld game from 2000 that most people never played. Worse ways to spend the wait.
