Netflix isn’t starting its live-action Dungeons & Dragons show with a party of adventurers. It’s starting with the vampire.

The streamer is developing a series set in the D&D universe, and the corner it’s picked is Ravenloft, home of Strahd von Zarovich. If you’ve ever sat at a table while a DM slid a black-and-red module across it, you know exactly what that means.

Reports indicate the series will chronicle the events that turned a former prince and warlord into one of the most iconic villains in tabletop RPG history. So this is an origin story, not a rescue mission.

What the official description actually promises

Per that description, it’s a tale of power, love, obsession and transformation, blending dark fantasy with gothic horror and tragic romance.

That last phrase is the interesting one. Tragic romance puts the emphasis somewhere very specific, and it suggests Netflix is less interested in dungeon crawls than in the thing that broke Strahd in the first place.

Gothic horror is also a harder register to pull off on television than sword-and-sorcery. Castles are easy. Dread is expensive.

The names attached are not the ones you’d guess

John August created the series. He’s the screenwriter behind Corpse Bride and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which is a resume with a very particular temperature to it: storybook darkness, characters who are sad and strange rather than simply evil.

For a story about a man who becomes a monster over a woman, that’s a reasonable fit.

Alfonso Cuarón is executive producing. The Oscar winner is joined by Gabriel Marano, Richard Schwartz and Gaby Rodriguez.

Why Ravenloft instead of the obvious stuff

D&D has no shortage of settings with more real estate and more merchandising potential. Netflix went with the one built around a single antagonist in a single cursed valley.

That’s a tighter box, and tighter boxes tend to produce better television. A show about Strahd has a protagonist, an ending everybody already knows and a reason for every scene to be about him.

It also sidesteps the problem that has sunk most attempts to adapt tabletop material: the source isn’t a story, it’s a toolkit. Ravenloft comes closer to having an actual plot than almost anything else on the shelf.

What Netflix hasn’t said

No cast. No release date. Nothing.

Which means the only thing to evaluate right now is the premise and the people, and both are stronger than the phrase “live-action Dungeons & Dragons series” would lead you to expect on a first read.

Whoever gets the role inherits a character defined by restraint. Strahd doesn’t hiss or lunge. He invites you to dinner, and the horror is that he means it.
