Nintendo is giving Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave 20 minutes of undivided attention on Tuesday, and that’s a lot of runway for one game.
The company confirmed a new Nintendo Direct dedicated entirely to the Switch 2 title. It streams Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 7 a.m. PDT / 10 a.m. EDT on Nintendo’s YouTube channel, and Nintendo says the deep dive will run roughly 20 minutes.
Fortune’s Weave is the newest entry in a tactical role-playing series that’s been running for 36 years. It was announced last September as a Switch 2 exclusive, and it arrives Sept. 17.
Four heroes, four reasons to fight
Nintendo describes the game as “an intertwining story of strength and steel alongside four new heroes: Cai, a young boy determined to save his imprisoned father; Dietrich, a swordsman ever on the hunt for a stronger foe; Theodora, a queen seeking to fulfill the long-held dream of her homeland; and Leda, a musician with her sights set on revenge.”
Each of the four has their own goals and their own storyline. What ties them together is The Dagsion Heroic Games, an event that appears to throw warriors at each other in a Colosseum-style arena.
The prize is worth the bruises. Whoever wins gets their wish granted by the Divine Sovereign, a godlike figure who hosts the games.
The city between the fights
Combat isn’t the whole of it. Between matches, players can explore the capital city of Dagsion, learn new techniques at the training grounds, strengthen bonds to recruit new allies and head outside the city walls for extra experience, Nintendo says.
That structure will read as familiar to anyone who put serious hours into 2019’s Fire Emblem: Three Houses. And there’s a reason for that. The game appears to be a prequel to Three Houses, with Dagda serving as home to a handful of characters from it.
So Tuesday morning, 20 minutes, one game, and a story that reaches back to the last Fire Emblem people are still arguing about.
